Holidate movie review: Emma Roberts' Netflix romcom fails to bring in the Christmas cheer it promises

Language: English

Christmas films always bring a special dose of holiday cheer to Hollywood’s jampacked slate every year. This year, the Netflix release Holidate rings in the winters early with a cutesie tale starring Emma Roberts and Luke Bracey in the lead.

The film opens into the borderline pathetic lives of Sloane (Roberts) and Jackson (Bracey) as they try their best to survive the prolonged period of winter events without feeling worse about their lives. Sloane finds herself lonely in a claustrophobic and overly enthusiastic family consisting of a pushy mother, an always pitying sister, a younger brother happily (and quickly) settling into married life, and a feisty aunt who manages to find herself a date for the end-of-year festivities.

The handsome Aussie Jackson, on the other hand, is smack in the middle of a crisis himself when his casual date hurls him into unexpected territories while meeting the girl’s parents. They treat him as their future son-in-law and even gifts him matching gaudy green sweaters to don on the occasion. When push comes to shove, he clarifies his intentions (or the lack thereof) and makes a dash for it.

A chance meeting brings the two protagonists together and they crack a deal to feign dating each other just till the holiday pressure subsides. They lay down strict rules which include being platonic with each other.

Their first faux date goes decently well, and their constant one-upmanship sees them through most of the special occasions till Valentine’s Day. But director John Whitesell fails to align the film with the winter holiday charm. The narrative gradually moves into the space of a girl-meets-boy love story rather than a Christmas special. For an audience that has been duly programmed for such a genre with years of film history as reference, Holidate offers nothing but predictable plot twists and a hackneyed climax.

But credit where it's due, both Sloane and Jackson’s characters reside in the realm of not desperately wanting to latch on to someone, despite their respective circumstances. Their interactions with each other are amply boosted by harmless flirting and inane humour, which make them indispensable to each other’s worlds, even at the cost of alienating their viewers.

Holidate also offers a hat-tip to its genre predecessors (that have been giants in their own rights), which include Sloane and Jackson riffing on the Ryan Gosling version of Swayze’s Dirty Dancing scene from Crazy Stupid Love.

When their casual choices give way to more serious feelings, the two begin hiding their instincts lest the other gets commitment-phobic. Confusion reigns and emotions are mutually hurt till the point of no-return when miraculously, things fall into place for a happily-ever-after.

In Holidate, Roberts brings in her edgy self (courtesy her quirky outing as a witch in American Horror Story’s Coven season). The film gains a spirited heroine because of Roberts’ sassy presence on screen which compliments Bracey’s calmer presence.

It’s always a lean playing ground if the genre is as limited as a rom-com (that too one which ought to focus on Christmas) and Holidate delivers no pleasant surprises. Despite its sincere attempts, the film could easily be shelved as another addition to Netflix’s plethora of Mills and Boon-esque features on romance.

Holidate is currently streaming on Netflix.

Pierce Brosnan, Daniel Craig remember Sean Connery: 'He shall always be remembered as the original James Bond'

Hollywood legend Sean Connery's predecessors in the James Bond franchise, Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig, remembered the original 007 as an acting giant who cast a long shadow of "cinematic splendour" that will live on forever.

The Legendary Scottish star, who became a global sensation as the first James Bond and featured in a string of cult hits in his five-decade-long career, died on Friday at the age of 90.

According to BBC, the actor passed away overnight in his sleep while in the Bahamas. He had been unwell for quite some time.

“Sir Sean Connery, you were my greatest James Bond as a boy, and as a man who became James Bond himself. You cast a long shadow of cinematic splendor that will live on forever," Brosnan wrote on Instagram.

The 67-year-old star, who played the suave British spy in four movies between 1995 to 2002, said all the actors who followed Connery's "iconic footsteps", looked up to him with reverence and admiration.

"Each man in his turn looked to you with reverence and admiration as we forged ahead with our own interpretations of the role.

“You were mighty in every way, as an actor and as a man, and will remain so till the end of time. You were loved by the world and will be missed. God bless, rest now, be at peace," he added.

Read his tribute here

Connery made his acting debut in 1956 with BBC production of Requiem for a Heavyweight, but his career breakthrough came when producers Albert Broccoli and Harry Saltzman roped him to play James Bond, the fictional spy created by author Ian Fleming.

He first played the role of 007 in 1962's Dr No, which he followed up with From Russia with Love (1963), Goldfinger(1964), Thunderball (1965), You Only Live Twice(1967), Diamonds Are Forever (1971) and Never Say Never Again(1983).

Craig, who currently plays the part and is looking forward to the release of 25th film in the franchise No Time to Die, said Connery defined an era.

“It is with much sadness that I heard of the passing of one of the true greats of cinema. Sir Sean Connery will be remembered as Bond and so much more.

"He defined an era and a style. The wit and charm he portrayed on screen could be measured in megawatts; he helped create the modern blockbuster," the actor said in a statement to Variety.

The 52-year-old actor said the cinema icon will continue to influence performers and filmmakers alike for years to come.

"My thoughts are with his family and loved ones. Wherever he is, I hope there is a golf course," he concluded.

No Time to Die marks Craig's fifth and final film as Bond.

Earlier, in a statement posted on Twitter, franchise producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli said they are "devastated" by Connery's death.

"He was and shall always be remembered as the original James Bond whose indelible entrance into cinema history began when he announced those unforgettable words.

"'The name’s Bond... James Bond' -- he revolutionised the world with his gritty and witty portrayal of the sexy and charismatic secret agent. He is undoubtedly largely responsible for the success of the film series and we shall be forever grateful to him," they said.

Sean Connery's James Bond portrayal remains the gold standard; nobody else comes close

The Scottish actor Sean Connery, one of the most enduringly popular screen icons of the 20th century, died in his sleep on Saturday, his family confirmed. He was 90 years old. Connery was best known for playing author Ian Fleming’s Mi6 spy James Bond, a film franchise whose success he was “largely responsible for”, as producer Barbara Broccoli admitted in her eulogy. He played Bond in a total of six films (Doctor No, From Russia With Love and so on) from 1962-1971, before returning to the role one last time for 1983’s Never Say Never Again.

A former bodybuilder who took up first theatre and then cinema by accident, Connery’s initial film appearances were marked by his tremendous screen presence — but little else. He grew to become a capable performer, however. Following his frenetic Bond decade in the 60s, Connery set about expanding his repertoire in real earnest; he felt stifled by his image as Agent 007, even professing a hatred of his beloved character at one point. He did two back-to-back movies with the director Sidney Lumet (12 Angry Men, Network): The Offence (1972), where Connery played a violent, morally ambiguous cop to much acclaim; and the Agatha Christie adaptation Murder on the Orient Express (1974).

He also played an over-the-hill, ageing Robin Hood alongside Audrey Hepburn’s Lady Marian in 1976’s Robin and Marian — this film marked Hepburn’s comeback after nearly a decade away from cinema, and critics agreed that she and Connery shared great chemistry. The movie’s bittersweet final scene is still remembered as one of the great tearjerker moments of 70s Hollywood. Connery continued doing a variety of dramatic roles throughout the 70s and 80s, the high points being John Huston’s 1975 film The Man Who Would Be King (based on the Rudyard Kipling book of the same name), Richard Attenborough’s sprawling WWII drama A Bridge Too Far (1977), the 1986 Umberto Eco adaptation The Name of the Rose, and Brian de Palma’s gangster classic The Untouchables (1987), for which he received an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.

These are all fine films, but Connery will, inevitably, be remembered for the Bond years, first and foremost.

It wasn’t just that the movies were blockbusters or cultural landmarks; of course they were. But the actor’s real achievement here was becoming the face of the era’s dominant collective fantasy. Remember, this was the era right after World War II. Heroism had to be covert, commissioned and executed in “foreign climes, with exotic birds” (as Connery himself put it) — because Hiroshima was still so recent, audiences didn’t really need a realistic, plausible story of international intrigue and warfare-by-another-name. What they did need was flair, originality and a sense of humour and Connery delivered on these fronts emphatically. Connery’s total commitment to these outrageous, over-the-top situations and characters was what made the early Bond films tick.

His James Bond remains the gold standard for the role. Nobody else comes close: not Pierce Brosnan, not Daniel Craig, and certainly not brief occupants like George Lazenby and Timothy Dalton. Ian Fleming even gave the character Scottish ancestry in later books, honoring Connery’s portrayal.

In the 90s Danny Boyle cult hit Trainspotting, the character Sick Boy (Jonny Lee Miller) is obsessed with Sean Connery — here’s what Sick Boy had to say about the young Connery. “I’d say in those days he was a muscular actor, with all the presence of someone like Cooper or Lancaster but combined with a sly wit, to make him a formidable romantic lead, closer in that respect to Cary Grant.” Arguments about various aspects of Connery’s career were a running gag throughout Trainspotting, where the main characters are all Scottish. He was, quite simply, a part of Scottish culture. Yesterday, Nicola Sturgeon, Scotland’s First Minister, tweeted that all of Scotland “was in mourning” after Connery’s death.

And yet, as with so many of his contemporaries, one cannot ignore or airbrush the darker parts of Connery’s legacy — in his case, the dangerous views he expressed about domestic abuse. In a 1965 Playboy interview, Connery said, “I don’t think there is anything particularly wrong about hitting a woman, although I don’t recommend doing it in the same way that you’d hit a man. An open-handed slap is justified if all other alternatives fail.”

Over two decades later, in 1987, he repeated more or less the same position during a televised interview with Barbara Walters. “If you have tried everything else – and women are pretty good at this – they can’t leave it alone,” Connery said, upon being asked what circumstances justified hitting women. “They want to have the last word and you give them the last word, but they’re not happy with the last word. They want to say it again, and get into a really provocative situation. And then, I think it (hitting) is absolutely right.”

Actress Diane Cilento was married to Connery during the peak Bond years (1962-73). After their divorce, she wrote in her memoir that Connery had been verbally and physically abusive with her. Connery always denied these claims, but eventually reversed his stance on abuse in the late 2000s, expressing regret for his earlier statements. Sean Connery was many things; a sex symbol, an actor who learned on the job, a patriotic Scotsman — and yes, a man with decidedly primitive views about women (even if this was ‘the norm’ back then). His life and career remind us that our icons are perfect only inside our heads. In the real world, nobody gets do-overs and everybody has to live with their own flawed, messy, sometimes downright harmful words and deeds.

And so it is with a man like Sean Connery, you either love him or you don’t. As Connery himself said as King Arthur in First Knight (1995), “I take the good with the bad. I can’t love people in slices.”
