Bigg Boss amid Covid-19: How this season of the reality show manoeuvred production around the pandemic

Bigg Boss 14 ended on 21 February and was known to be the season of comebacks. While the format of the show requires contestants to be locked up inside the house for approximately 15 weeks, season 14 began in the pandemic environment, on 3 October 2020, and seemed to have ‘refuted’ this format as it brought back the most number of evicted contestants into the house.

One of the major reasons for several re-entries (of contestants) during this season of Bigg Boss was the on-going pandemic. The special focus this season was on contestants' health and hygiene and a mandatory corona test for all the people entering the house.

Abhishek Rege, CEO, Endemol Shine India, in an exclusive chat with Firstpost, said, “We had X number of contestants who had quarantined and who were tested negative, and when they were evicted they were still quarantined and it was better to send the same person inside than send a fresh person because he or she might be doing some event and it could have been risky for the housemates. It was these factors that mattered to us as a broadcaster. The season therefore turned out to be very different as covid was at the back of everyone’s mind.”

He further added, “Typically, when I needed to get someone fresh there was a need to do two-week quarantine versus someone who was already in the ‘bubble’. So when a contestant, who was already tested negative, came out and entered back within a week it didn’t matter. If there was no covid situation, we wouldn’t have had so much of in and out, and maybe we'd have seen more fresh faces.”

Besides the safety factor, some of the ‘fresh’ faces and celebrities had to refuse the offer to appear in the 14th season because they were busy with other commitments and didn’t have enough time to prepare for the quarantining process. Confirming the same, Gautam Gulati, Bigg Boss, season eight winner, said, “They had offered me to participate in this season but a lot of days would have been spent in quarantine, so I couldn’t join them. I was busy shooting and dubbing. I was told to stay in quarantine for 14 days before entering the house which wasn’t possible. I couldn’t have left my work to get into the house and I had to say 'No'.”

The making of a reality show in a closed-house format during the pandemic was definitely a challenge and just before the show went on air, chief content officer of Colors TV, Manisha Sharma, had told the show host Salman Khan that even if a single contestant had coronavirus symptoms, the shoot had to be stalled. "Bigg Boss is a real-time show, and we cannot take a risk. All contestants were tested and quarantined before they entered the show. The crew was also tested every weekend. We had taken all precautions and planned accordingly, but in case someone fell sick, we would have to give cameras to contestants to shoot," Sharma said.

While some of the 'promising' celebrities didn’t want to risk it and they declined the offer, there were many who accepted as they found it safer being inside the house than the outside world. “We had to explain the process that we would follow. Some people were apprehensive because the selection process was happening somewhere around July-August when there was a lot more fear. There were people who refused to come on the show. In fact, we explained to a lot of them that Bigg Boss was much safer as compared to shooting regular shows where they would have to return home at night. We were creating a bubble where everyone would be inside the house. Some people understood that and accepted the offer while some didn’t and hence they dropped out,” said Rege.

By the time the shoot began there was a great deal of pressure mounting out of fear, and besides the standard operating protocols set by the state government and broadcasters, “the production house had its own practices learnt from international territories”.

“Each project is different and especially for Bigg Boss we tried to keep bare minimum people on set. We retained all the staff just that we extended, or changed the shift in a manner that at any given point in time we don’t have too many people on set. So instead of having a 10 to 12 hour shift we had a six to eight hour shift,” said Rege, adding, “And the major challenge for us was to keep telling people, to keep ensuring that they wear masks, wear face shields, stay sanitised, and it did take us considerable time doing that.”

Further, explaining the process, the CEO said there were completely dedicated teams looking after the pantry and tasks inside the house and these team members had to undergo covid tests on a regular basis. “All non-food items were sanitised with UV lights and all food items were cleaned with prescribed cleaners. We tried to make the house a complete bubble which ensured that the housemates were never at risk and we had absolutely no issues inside the house,” said Rege.

Interestingly, this season also saw a glass partition in the house which was to ensure those who weren’t quarantined enough and came to visit the contestants, including artistes, performers, and contestants’ relatives (in the family week), were in a “sterile environment”. “The house was kept completely detached from all the guests. Whenever we put someone inside the house we ensured that they were quarantined before they entered the house. So we followed all the basic principles to ensure that we don’t bring up the risk,” confirmed Rege.

When asked if the tasks were designed keeping covid in mind, Rege said, “From the perspective that we shouldn’t need anything from outside, yes, but more than creatively, we had operationally kept things in mind. So, we didn’t have the possible freedom of deciding today and doing something tomorrow. We would plan in advance so that we didn’t have to crowd the place with carpenters and everything else. If a certain prop had to be done, it was planned in advance. It was constructed somewhere else, brought in and put together and sanitised completely by the team that was inside who were already in a bubble.”

When asked about the instructions that were given to the contestants, he said, “Obviously they were told to be careful, they need to keep washing and sanitising their hands frequently. Besides that no other special instructions were given to them.”

To take all the precautionary measures did add to the cost and budget of this season, “but the broadcaster had covered up for the ppe kits, sanitiser, mask and other basic stuff, but priority this year was safety and that is not something we wanted to play around with. We were also lucky that while we saw the cost going up, it provided employment for a number of people and the show kept people entertained. It was not a bad deal at all,” said Rege.

To get Salman Khan (who returned to host the show for the 11th time), to say ‘yes’ to the show was also very critical for the show’s success but Khan was very supportive, said Rege. “The first thing Salman asked us was how we would handle the covid situation and after we explained he had no issues except that he would personally check whether we followed all the protocols or not. Restarting business was also a big priority as it led to employment and that was also discussed with him. He could be at risk as well and not just the housemates but the overall aim was to get back and make the show happen. The perspective was not just entertainment but employment as well.”

Amitabh Bachchan confirms he recently underwent eye surgery: Sight difficult, recovery is slow

Megastar Amitabh Bachchan on Monday revealed he has undergone an eye surgery, two days after hinting about a medical condition on his official blog.

The 78-year-old actor wrote on his blog that the recovery of the surgery is slow and quipped that he be excused for any typing errors.

"Eye surgeries at this age are delicate and need precision handling. The best is being done and one hopes all shall be well. The sight and the recovery is slow and difficult so if there are typing errors they are to be excused," Bachchan wrote.

The actor also hinted at another eye surgery and hoped he would recover before the shoot of his next film with director Vikas Bahl.

"My love to all. Progress is slow and there is yet another eye to go so its a long haul, hoping of course that it all gets well in time for my schedule which begins in a few. The new film with Vikas Bahl, tentatively titled Good Bye," he wrote.

Bachchan, who had on Saturday written about a medical condition that required surgery, said he is spending his days with "nothing to do" as he cannot read, write and see because of the surgery.

"So just sitting there in oblivion, eyes shut most of the time and attempted listening to music, which is not a very convincing pastime unless of course it is being created. But that too is ‘out of bounds’ for the moment."

The screen icon wrote he was overwhelmed with the love and support which came his way after he opened up about the medical condition on Saturday.

Calling it an "emotional moment", Bachchan wrote, "I never expect it and when it comes, it's overwhelming. Thank you, deeply touched.

"What would I ever do without the love and affection I get from this grateful caring and loving family," he added.

Aditi Rao Hydari on choosing more South Indian projects: Was grabbing the best of what I was being offered

Aditi Rao Hydari, whose new release is Parineeti Chopra in Netflix's The Girl on the Train, recently spoke about working more often in South Indian films than Bollywood.

"The stuff that was coming to me in Hindi, I wasn’t so excited about. But films coming my way in Tamil, Telugu or Malayalam were really exciting. People were writing scripts for me, waiting for me to finish something and join them. It wasn’t that I was weighing my options. I was grabbing the best of what I was being offered, with some of the best people," the actor told Press Trust of India.

Hydari made her Tamil debut in 2007 with period drama Sringaram, she only gained significant recognition after starring in Mani Ratnam's 2017 romantic-drama Kaatru Veliyidai. She made her Hindi debut with filmmaker Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s Delhi 6 in 2009 and rose to prominence in 2011 with director Sudhir Mishra’s movie Yeh Saali Zindagi.

The actor went on to feature in Imtiaz Ali’s Rockstar, romantic-comedy London Paris New York, action-thriller Wazir and Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s period- drama Padmaavat.

Hydari, whose last Hindi film was Mishra’s 2018 drama Daas Dev, said lack of good roles in Hindi film industry never bothered her as the interesting work kept coming from south.

Recently, Malavika Mohanan had spoken about working starring in her second Hindi language film, and how, compared to Bollywood, other film industries are often given less importance.

IMPPA writes letter to Maharashtra government highlighting lack of subsidy for Marathi film industry

Indian Motion Picture Producers' Association (IMPPA) has asked the Maharashtra government to address the lack of adequate subsidy to the Marathi film industry.

In a letter to Cabinet Minister for Medical Education and Cultural Affairs Amit Deshmukh, the film body asked the government to form a Subsidy Approval Committee that would address the issue.

"Marathi film industry has revived in a big way because of the subsidy for Marathi films provided by the Government of Maharashtra which subsidy is what has enabled Marathi film producers to survive despite very poor market conditions and due to subsidy being available more and more producers are planning and starting new Marathi films in the hope of receiving substantial amount as subsidy from the Maharashtra Government (sic)," says the letter, according to Free Press Journal.

The film body states that producers from the Marathi film industry are facing financial problems due to the non-payment of the subsidy amount by the Maharashtra government.

IMPPA says that the dismal state of the Marathi film industry is due to a three-year delay in formation of the committee meant to view, evaluate and decide the amount films should receive. More than 300 films are eligible for payment, have even applied for the same, but are yet to receive a response.

Prince Harry, Meghan Markle open up on 'unbelievably tough’ split from royal life, on Oprah Winfrey special

Prince Harry says the process of separating from royal life has been very difficult for him and his wife, Meghan.

In an interview with Oprah Winfrey, Harry invoked the memory of his late mother, Princess Diana, who had to find her way alone after she and Prince Charles divorced.

“I’m just really relieved and happy to be sitting here talking to you with my wife by my side because I can’t begin to imagine what it must have been like for her going through this process by herself all those years ago,” Harry said, adding, “because it’s been unbelievably tough for the two of us.”

“But at least we have each other,” Harry said, in a clip from the interview special, which is scheduled to air 7 March on CBS and the following day in Britain. Diana was shown in a photo holding toddler Harry as he made the comments. His mother died in 1997 of injuries suffered in a car crash.

Harry and Meghan sat opposite Winfrey and side-by-side, holding hands during the interview that was conducted in a lush garden setting. The couple lives in Montecito, California, where they are neighbours of Winfrey. Meghan, who recently announced she is pregnant with the couple’s second child, wore an empire-style black dress with embroidery. Harry wore a light gray suit and white dress shirt, minus a tie.

As for Meghan Markle, the actor starred in the TV legal drama Suits. She married Queen Elizabeth II’s grandson at Windsor Castle in May 2018, and their son, Archie, was born a year later.

The brief promotional clip was one of two that aired Sunday during CBS’ news magazine 60 Minutes. Winfrey’s questions and comment were predominant in the other clip, including her statement that “You said some pretty shocking things here,” without an indication of what she was referring to. Meghan was not heard from in the clips.

See the promo clip below

Harry and Meghan stepped away from full-time royal life in March 2020, unhappy at media scrutiny and the strictures of their roles. They cited what they described as the intrusions and racist attitudes of the British media toward the duchess, who is African American.

It was agreed the situation would be reviewed after a year. On Friday, Buckingham Palace confirmed that the couple will not be returning to royal duties and Harry will give up his honorary military titles — a decision that makes formal, and final, the couple’s split from the royal family.

The pair, also known as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, verified “they will not be returning as working members of the Royal Family. “

A spokesperson for the couple hit back at suggestions that Meghan and Harry were not devoted to duty.

“As evidenced by their work over the past year, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex remain committed to their duty and service to the U.K. and around the world, and have offered their continued support to the organizations they have represented regardless of official role,” the spokesperson said in a statement.

Warner Bros′ live-action-animation hybrid Tom & Jerry opens to $13.7 mn at US box office

A not-so-distant recovery for movie theaters could be glimpsed Sunday, as Warner Bros′ live-action-animation hybrid Tom & Jerry debuted with $13.7 million in ticket sales, the best domestic opening of the year.

The better-than-expected opening came despite just 42 percent of US theaters being open, according to data firm Comscore. Tom & Jerry also played in 2,475 North American cinemas simultaneously as it did in the home, where it’s streaming on HBO Max for a month.

Yet Tom & Jerry still managed the second-best opening of the pandemic following Warner Bros′ Wonder Woman 1984, which launched with $16.7 million in December while also landing on HBO Max. The next-closest debuts — Tenet, The Croods: A New Age — eked out about $10 million on opening weekend.

“With half of theaters still closed, the pandemic still a threat, and Tom & Jerry available at home, this is a very good opening,” said David A. Gross, who runs the movie consulting firm Franchise Entertainment Research. “Under normal circumstances, this weekend would comfortably be above $35 million -- a positive sign for the business and for theatrical’s pull over home entertainment.”

Tom & Jerry has also made $25.1 million internationally, bringing its worldwide total to $38.8 million, according to studio estimates. The film, directed by Tim Story and based on the characters created by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera, stars Chlo├л Grace Moretz.

Theaters in some crucial markets are also about to come on line. On Friday, New York City theaters will be allowed to open at 25 percent capacity for the first time since they closed last March. Next week, Disney launches the animated Raya and the Last Dragon in theaters and on Disney+ for $30, not counting the subscription cost.

Though Warner Bros. was criticised by some for abandoning movie theaters when it announced plans to send all 2021 films to both HBO Max and cinemas, the studio is presently a lifeline to theaters. The studio’s films — including The Little Things, Judas and the Black Messiah and Wonder Woman 1984 — accounted for roughly 80 percent of domestic ticket sales over the weekend.

Private rental bookings are helping the modest return of moviegoing. Family, friends and “pods” have booked an entire theater. Warner Bros. said Tom & Jerry has already seen more than 10,000 such bookings.

Their journey from demure housewives to daring dames forms the crux of the movie.

Bachchan says in a press release, “As cinemas open their doors again, it is a matter of time till audiences open their hearts again; we just need to welcome them back with a rocking film! Jahaan Chaar Yaar is an empowering tale of friendship filled with engaging twists and turns. I am sure it will reignite the glory of big-screen entertainment.”

Watch: On Day 6 of Delhi Literature Festival 2021, Yasser Usman talks about Guru Dutt and his enduring enigma

The sixth and the final day of the Delhi Literature Festival 2021 concluded with a session on actor Guru Dutt, with journalist-writer Yasser Usman talking about his new book Guru Dutt: An Unfinished Story.

The conversation took a closer look at why, even after 57 years since his passing, Guru Dutt continues to dominate conversations on Hindi cinema and captures the imaginations of cinephiles world over.

Usman answered questions on why, after having profiled Rekha, Rajesh Khanna and Sanjay Dutt, he chose to travel all the way back to the 1940s and 50s to document the life and times of Guru Dutt — a man on whom a significant body of literature already exists.

The writer spoke extensively on his interactions with the actor's sister, artist Lalitha Lajmi, whose memories and recollections form the basis of the book. He spoke on Guru Dutt's pursuit for artistic perfection and his temperamental ways that often left people disappointed and upset with him; his hypocrisy of showing independent women in his films while disallowing his wife Geeta Dutt from pursuing a career after marriage, and his struggles with his mind at a time when mental health awareness did not exist.

Golden Globes 2021: Chlo├й Zhao becomes second woman to win best director honour

Chlo├й Zhao became the second woman to win the best director at the Golden Globes in a year in which three women were nominated for the first time in the category.

Zhao was honoured for her work on Nomadland, about people who take to the road and move from place to place seeking work for usually low wages. It stars two-time Oscar winner Frances McDormand and includes nonprofessional actors.

It also won as best motion picture drama.

“I especially want to thank the nomads who shared their stories with us,” Zhao said, accepting the directing honour virtually on Sunday night.

She singled out real-life nomad Bob Wells, who appears in the movie, for help with her remarks.

“This is what he said about compassion,” Zhao said. “Compassion is the breakdown of all the barriers between us. A heart to heart pounding. Your pain is my pain. It’s mingled and shared between us.”

The 38-year-old director who lives in Los Angeles is a leading Oscar contender for Nomadland, which is in select theatres and streaming on Hulu.

“Now this is why I fell in love with making movies and telling stories because it gives us a chance to laugh and cry together and it gives us a chance to learn from each other and to have more compassion for each other,” Zhao said in her acceptance remarks. “So thank you to everyone who made it possible to do what I love.”

She joins Barbra Streisand, who won in 1984 for Yentl, as the only women to win directing honours at the Globes. Until this year, just five women had been nominated in the category.

Regina King (One Night in Miami..) and Emerald Fennell (Promising Young Woman) joined Zhao among this year’s nominees.

Zhao also was nominated for best motion picture screenplay and lost to Aaron Sorkin. McDormand received a nod for actress in a motion picture drama but lost.

Born in China, Zhao made her feature directing debut in 2015 with Songs My Brother Taught Me. She broke out in 2017 with The Rider. Next up for her is the big-budget Marvel film Eternals, set for release this fall.

Golden Globes 2021: Daniel Kaluuya's Best Actor speech suffers Zoom glitch, actor asks 'can you hear me now?'

Actor Daniel Kaluuya has bagged his maiden Golden Globe award for his impassioned performance as the Black Panther Party chairman Fred Hampton in Judas and the Black Messiah.

The British actor earned the trophy in the best performance by an actor in a supporting role in any motion picture category for the film, helmed by Shaka King in his studio feature directorial debut.

Kaluuya, who won the first honour of the scaled-down virtual ceremony which is being held bi-coastally from New York and California in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, faced a technical problem as he started his acceptance speech.

"You're doing me dirty, you're doing me dirty," the 32-year-old actor quipped as his video feed went silent.

Kaluuya's audio feed didn't connect, leaving viewers with only his muted video feed.

Big Little Lies star Laura Dern, who was presenting the award to Kaluuya, apologised for the "bad connection" on stage as the feed cut away.

"We apologise for that technical problem and send all of our congratulations to Daniel and his Golden Globe win," she said.

As it has happened over many Zoom calls this past year, it turns out Kaluuya's feed was muted, but quickly rectified, a source told Variety.

When Kaluuya came back into view, he asked "Is this on? Can you hear me now?"

Once the audio issue was resolved, the actor thanked his family and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), the body that conducts the Golden Globes currently facing fire over its lack of Black representation among its ranks.

Kaluuya further said he gave "everything" to play Hampton in the 1960s-set period who was murdered at the hands of the FBI.

"The great Nipsey Hussle says, ''We are here to give until we are empty,'' and I gave everything. I couldn't give it to a more noble man -- that's chairman Fred Hampton -- and I hope generations after this can see how brilliantly he fought, how brilliantly he spoke and how brilliantly he loved.

"He taught me about myself, made me grow as a man and I appreciate it with all my heart. And I hope people -- there's a lot of information about how he died, but I hope you people out there will grow and learn about how incredibly he lived. Thank you so much for this honour," he said.

Judas and the Black Messiah is a Chicago-set film that follows petty criminal William O'Neal (played by LaKeith Stanfield) who agrees to work as an informant for the FBI in order to infiltrate the Black Panther Party and take down the chairman of its Illinois chapter Fred Hampton (Kaluuya).

Kaluuya bested Sacha Baron Cohen, who was one of the frontrunners in the category for his turn as social activist Abbie Hoffman in the legal drama The Trial of the Chicago 7.

Later, director-writer Aaron Sorkin won the best screenplay for a motion picture for the Chicago 7.

Golden Globes 2021: Nomadland announced Best Drama; Chadwick Boseman wins posthumous Best Actor award

With homebound nominees appearing by remote video and hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler on different sides of the country, a very socially distanced 78th Golden Globe Awards trudged on in the midst of the pandemic and a storm of criticism.

Fey took the stage at New York’s Rainbow Room while Poehler remained at the Globes’ usual home at the Beverly Hilton. In their opening remarks, they managed their typically well-timed back-and-forth despite being almost 3,000 miles from each other.

Golden Globes 2021: Tina Fey, Amy Poehler host virtual ceremony from different venues; nominees Zoom in from around the world

Glam was back for the Golden Globes virtual, bicoastal awards night Sunday as nominees Zoomed in from around the world and, for Leslie Odom Jr, from his front porch in Los Angeles not far from the action in Beverly Hills.

And they were ready, style wise, as the Globes split hosts, with Amy Poehler at the Beverly Hilton and Tina Fey at the Rainbow Room in New York.

There was nary a pair of sweats in sight. Jason Sudeikis was the glam outlier in a tie-dye hoodie as he picked up an award remotely, saying : “Wow, do I talk now?” Jodie Foster picked up her virtual trophy wearing a black-and-white jammies set, her dog Ziggy in a bandana to match and her wife by her side.

Regina King’s dog snoozed in the background as she showed off her Louis Vuitton gown in silver and black. Amanda Seyfried, in Savannah, Georgia, wore a sunny, springy coral Oscar de la Renta with floral adornment, echoing many stars who said they wanted to bring a little joy.

“I’ve got my son, who is 5 months old, laying against a pillow in a tux,” Seyfried said during a round of pre-show interviews.

Cynthia Erivo went for neon green Valentino to present in person, and Kaley Cuoco munched pizza in a de la Renta design. Gillian Anderson, alone in Prague, wore a green gown and Julia Garner a two-tone Prada black and white look. She didn’t forget the lipstick, a deep red.

Laverne Cox, in a red, embellished cape-sleeve gown, did something even more unusual: She stood up to chat with reporters on E! and NBC via Zoom before the show.

“I wanted to feel festive and go for it,” she told NBC. “It’s really amazing about this whole Zoom world. People can do whatever they want.”

That meant Chanel for Shira Haas in Los Angeles, and custom Gucci for Elle Fanning in London.

“It’s nice to have something to celebrate and get dressed up for, and actually put on a dress to walk from my living room to my kitchen,” Fanning told E!. “I thought, why not?”

Fey and Poehler, both dressed in black to open the show, joked about the unusual set up and the distance between them, with Fey pretending to stroke Poehler’s hair through their screens. The two, with numerous fashion changes, were joined by an array of presenters as winners accepted via Zoom, with an early glitch when winner Daniel Kaluuya’s audio went silent at first, then perked up so he could speak.

King’s dog wasn’t the only surprise star. Sarah Paulson held her little black pooch on screen.

And there were kids, too. Mark Ruffalo’s two wandered behind him as he accepted an award. Aaron Sorkin was joined by a bevy of women on hand for his win. Lee Isaac Chung, director of Minari, hugged his small daughter tight as he accepted an award, his dressed-up offspring squeezing back with: “I prayed, I prayed, I prayed.”

Peter Morgan, creator of The Crown, was a winner from his “tragic little office,” calling the pre-pandemic Globes “always the most fun awards show.”

Nominees bantered from screen to screen, shouting out their hellos to each other.

On stage and for their small, in-person — and masked — audiences, production designer Brian Stonestreet pivoted like never before when the Globes decided to go bicoastal earlier in February, just days before show time.

The awards veteran, who has designed for the Grammys, the Billboards, the Academy of Country Music and others, told The Associated Press ahead of the Globes’ big night that he gained massive horizontal real estate for the screen-centric show with the shrinking of tables in size and number.

“Funnily enough, it gave me a little more freedom in terms of scenery,” he said of the Beverly Hilton, while incorporating the Rainbow Room’s massive center chandelier adorned with stars and orbs in New York.

He used the extra space (about 36 guests in New York and 42 in Beverly Hills) to expand screen presence and curvier, more dramatic, staircases. On the floor, he placed trophies on pedestals among his two- and three-person cocktail tables, rather than the usual 6-foot round tables seating 10 to 12 people for a total of more than 1,000.

Instead of star-studded crowds crammed into the Hilton’s ballroom, the Globes hosted frontline and essential workers, along with food bank workers from the show’s philanthropic partnership with Feeding America.

Lydia Marks, a New York set decorator, told The Associated Press the evening’s technical challenges were many. With so many remote locations and two live sets, the few glitches should be forgiven, she said.

“While it looks easy, the direction needs to remain responsive in a way that is more like a live sporting event than an awards show,” Marks said. “I think it looks pretty seamless and controlled for the amount of feeds they are working with.”

Rakul Preet talks about recovering from Covid-19 and why playing unconventional roles matter

Rakul Preet rarely stops working, be it as an actress in multiple languages cutting across borders or pushing herself in terms of her fitness to lead a healthy lifestyle. For that matter, she hardly pauses for a breath, just like a marathoner who wouldn’t stop running. But she has a different take on it.

“It really isn’t that stressful, at least in my case. Athletes run a lot and a lot of people find joy and peace in it. One thing which has remained constant for me is my desire to excel in everything I do. And of late, I’ve become calmer as a person. Earlier, when there’s a clash of dates between different shoots, I would get a little stressed out about it. But now, I leave it to my team to figure it out because there’s no point breaking your head over adjusting time for just one day. The whole world stopped for months altogether last year, but we managed to cope up with it, didn’t we?” she says, referring to the lockdown in 2020 and pandemic.

Despite the strict Covid-19 protocols and other guidelines that each of her film units were adhering to, Rakul tested positive for Covid-19 in late December, but she says that she felt the real impact only a couple of weeks later. “That’s when fatigue hit me and my body gave up. I can’t stop exercising, but during that phase, I just couldn’t do anything. Slowly, as I regained my strength, I had to be careful and not push myself too much. I used to lift 50 pounds of weights quite easily, but I had to drop it to 15 pounds. I had to make do with resistance bands to keep myself going. I’m in a much better state now, and at the moment, I’m juggling between three different films,” she says.

Rakul Preet in Check

2021 is already turning out to be a hectic year for her with two films each in Telugu and Tamil, and four more in Hindi, which are either complete or at various stages of principal shooting. In Hindi alone, she has films like May Day, Thank God, Attack, and Sardar and Grandson to her credit. The first among them to have hit the screens was Chandrasekhar Yeleti’s Check in which she played a lawyer, a first in her career. The actress is all praise for the Telugu filmmaker, who had made films like Manamantha, Sahasam, Anaganaga O Roju, and Aithe in the past. “I’ve always been a fan of his writing and I love the way he writes the characters. So, when I was offered this role in Check, I was more than happy to be part of the project. The thing about working with wonderful directors like him is that you understand a bit more about yourself and what you are capable of doing in front of the camera. I don’t think you can pinpoint what’s so unique or if there’s a particular lesson that you learn, but when you observe how the director is treating the characters and how he wants to emote, you soak it all in,” Rakul confesses.

She has already finished shooting for Krish’s untitled film in Telugu in which she’ll be seen as a village belle, and post Check, she says she’ll be sporting a de-glamorous look once again. Does she find herself gravitate towards roles which portray her in a different light? “In our industry, we tend to bracket people based on their looks, and the common perception that people have of you is that your real-life persona matches with that of your reel-life image. So, the roles you keep getting are also a particular type. I want to break that notion. I want to play all sorts of roles, give it my best shot. We actors are more than our looks. But it’s a matter of whether you get that opportunity or not,” she avers. So, what does it take to break these stereotypes? “It all boils down to a director’s vision and if they can see me play a certain role, which I have never done before. That’s why I really liked what I did in films directed by Krish and Chandrasekhar Yeleti. I know I have done something completely different from what I have done in the past,” Rakul signs off.

Chinese moviegoers flock to theatres after COVID-19 containment, spur new box office records

The thrills and chills of the big screen are back big-time in the world’s largest film market.

With the coronavirus well under control in China and cinemas running at half capacity, moviegoers are smashing China's box office records, with domestic productions far outpacing their Hollywood competitors.

February marked China’s all-time biggest month for movie ticket sales, which have so far totalled 11.2 billion yuan ($1.7 billion). China overtook the US as the world’s biggest market for movie ticket sales last year as the American box office took a massive hit from the closure of cinemas because of the pandemic.

Chinese theatres were able to reopen by midyear and have seen steady audience growth since then. Local movies have also benefited from periodic unofficial “blackout" periods, when only domestic productions are allowed to be screened. A dearth of major Hollywood blockbusters over recent months appears to have also boosted the market for Chinese films.

“People were encouraged to stay in Beijing for the Lunar New Year, and so watching movies in the cinema became the top choice of entertainment,” said Chu Donglei, marketing manager at Poly Cinema’s Tiananmen branch in central Beijing.

Mask wearing is mandatory and moviegoers must register with a cellphone app so they can be traced in the event of an outbreak. Only every other seat is allowed to be occupied, making it even harder to obtain tickets for the most popular films.

According to the China Movie Data Information Network, 95 percent of ticket sales came from the seven top-grossing films timed for release around the Lunar New Year festival, which began this year on 12 February.

Hi, Mom, a time-travelling comedy written and directed by and starring Jia Ling, was the top earner with 4.36 billion yuan, followed by action comedy Detective Chinatown 3, with 4.13 billion yuan.

Wang Xiaoyu, 32, who works in the film industry, was only able to procure a ticket for Hi, Mom on Thursday and called the viewing experience “deeply moving."

“I know there are some movies that are released and streamed online. But I think the experience of watching movies online is not as good as that of watching in a cinema,” Wang said.

A lack of entertainment options helped pump up ticket sales during the pandemic, foretelling a bright future for the Chinese film industry, Wang said.

Recent box office figures show the “great resiliency and powerful foundation of China’s film industry," said Fu Yalong, deputy general manager of the Solution Center at ENDATA, an analysis firm focusing on the entertainment industry.

“During the Lunar New Year, there were films with a variety of genres and topics and the audiences were satisfied," Fu said. “Even with the impact of the pandemic and the increase in ticket prices, we were still able to score such achievements.”

College student Zhang Jiazhi, 21, said the movie theatre experience was a welcome break from staying at home watching videos. Successful online film promotion also helped attract many viewers to brick-and-mortar cinemas, Zhang said.

“I’m bored, and you can’t stay at home watching (streaming service) Douyin all the time, so I came to the cinema to watch a movie. There’s nothing to do,” said Zhang, who is on winter break and came to the cinema to see A Writer’s Odyssey, a Chinese fantasy film which he said he didn’t quite understand.

Last year, China sold an estimated $2.7 billion in tickets compared to $2.3 billion in the US, which saw an 80 percent drop in ticket sales. The Eight Hundred, an action drama glorifying China's resistance to Japanese invaders in 1930s Shanghai, was the world's biggest hit, making $461.3 million at the box office, most of it within China.

China's theatres also closed for a time during the height of COVID-19 in the country last spring, but gradually reopened over the summer. As of Friday, China has gone 11 days without reporting a single new case of local transmission of the virus.

Since the outbreak was first detected in the central city of Wuhan in late 2019, China has reported a total of 89,877 cases, including 4,636 deaths.

Kal Penn writes to Irrfan Khan's son, Babil: 'The Namesake brought me greatest artistic happiness'

Irrfan Khan's son Babil said he was left 'speechless' when actor Kal Penn reached out to him. Penn, who worked alongside Khan in Mira Nair's The Namesake, said that he wasn't sure how to get in touch with Khan’s family, but was glad that he finally could after Babil presumably reached out to him.

Khan passed away at 53 in April 2020 after a long battle against cancer.

Penn, in the message, thanked Babil for reaching out to him and said that The Namesake was the project that he was “most proud of” and which bought him the 'greatest artistic happiness'.

"I've thought of you two and your mom a lot this past year and wasn't sure how to get in touch to share my love and gratitude. It really means so much to me that you reached you." Penn asked Babil to meet him the next time he visits New York.

Reacting to this, Babil wrote on his Instagram Stories, "What is happening? How to write a reply when you're speechless?

Babil shared Kal Penn’s message to him about Irrfan (Photo: Babil/Instagram)

Penn had previously shared a condolences post for Irrfan. He wrote, "Never seen someone use the beats of silence so beautifully to convey so much about who we are."

Based on Jhumpa Lahiri’s novel of the same name, the film featured Tabu as Irrfan's wife and Sahira Nair as his daughter. The film depicted the struggles of a couple (Irrfan and Tabu), first-generation immigrants of Bengal to the US and their American-born kids.

Malavika Mohanan says it is 'unfortunate' Bollywood is put on 'higher pedestal' than other film industries

Malavika Mohanan, who was last seen in Master alongside Vijay, will soon make her way into the Hindi film industry with Yudhra alongside Siddhant Chaturvedi. The romantic-action-thriller is slated for a summer 2022 release.

Yudhra marks Mohanan's second Hindi project, after the 2017 drama Beyond the Clouds helmed by acclaimed Iranian filmmaker Majid Majidi. The actor tells Hindustan Times that like most of the films she works in, Yudhra is also an intuitive pick.

She adds that having worked in big-budget South Indian productions like Master and Rajinikanth's Petta, she realises how Bollywood is given more importance over other industries.

"Bollywood is an amazing industry. I have grown up watching Hindi films, I am a Mumbai girl, and seen Shah Rukh Khan, Madhuri Dixit Nene, and all these people. For most of us Indians, Bollywood is more than just cinema, it’s an emotion, nostalgia. There’s a different kind of pride we have for it. Having said that, I do see people unfortunately put Bollywood at a higher pedestal than other industries," she says.

Mohanan explains that she does not discriminate with cinema on the basis of language. Though Bollywood has a wider reach, she has never believed it to be more superior.

Besides Yudhra, Mohanan will also be seen in an untitled Karthick Naren feature, tentatively titled D43, with Dhanush.

Russo Brothers recall how they had to 'fight' with Sony to cast Tom Holland as Spider-Man

Russo Brothers fought Sony in order to cast Tom Holland as Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, reveal the director duo in a new interview.

Holland first appeared in Captain America: Civil War, followed by other Marvel spinoffs and his own Spider-Man film series set up at Sony. He’s about to appear in the third entry, Spider-Man: No Way Home, due for theatres in December.

In an interview with British GQ, Russo Brothers recall how Sony was involved in the lengthy process to find the right actor for the iconic superhero. However, when it came down to Holland, the directors and Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige were very enthusiastic about the young actor, but the studio was more resistant to the choice, according to the Russos.

"We could tell we were meeting resistance from Sony. So we brought [Holland] back, brought him back, brought him back, and we were relentless in our pursuit of jamming him down the throat of the studio who owns this IP. It came down to a fight, yet Sony just kept dragging their feet...they were reticent, nervous, about handing off something that could ultimately cost them hundreds of millions of dollars, if not billions of dollars down the line,” the filmmakers said.

Nevertheless, the approach has paid off, given that Spider-Man: Far From Home went on to become Sony’s highest-grossing title ever, writes Screen Rant.

Meanwhile, Holland recently reunited with Russo Brothers, outside of MCU, for the crime thriller, Cherry.

Christian Bale to reunite with Scott Cooper for The Pale Blue Eye, based on Louis Bayard's 2003 novel

Hollywood star Christian Bale is re-teaming with filmmaker Scott Cooper for his next feature The Pale Blue Eye.

The Oscar-winning actor previously collaborated with the director for critically-acclaimed movies Out of the Furnace and Hostiles.

According to Deadline, the new movie is based on author Louis Bayard's 2003 novel of the same title.

Thriller revolves around the attempt to solve a series of murders that took place in 1830 at the US Military Academy at West Point.

Bale will portray a veteran detective who investigates the murders, helped by a detail-oriented young cadet who will later become a world famous author, Edgar Allan Poe.

Cooper said that the film is his attempt at whodunnit genre.

"I want to make films that push me into a different, maybe uncomfortable space, but I am glad to have Christian go there with me. I’ve wanted to make this for over a decade and fortunately for me, Christian has perfectly aged into the lead character," the filmmaker said.

"He was far too young when I first thought of making this. Films are meant to happen at the right time. Christian is always in high demand, but to be able to make this with him will be such a joy for me," he added.

Cooper and Bale will also produce the movie alongside John Lesher and Cross Creek’s Tyler Thompson.

Production is expected to commence later this year.

Bale is currently filming for Marvel Studios' Thor: Love and Thunder, co-starring Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman and Tessa Thompson.

He will also star in filmmaker David O'Russell's untitled next alongside John David Washington and Margot Robbie.

Amitabh Bachchan to undergo surgery due to a 'medical condition', actor shares on his blog

Megastar Amitabh Bachchan has shared that he has a "medical condition" for which he needs to undergo surgery.

It is unclear if the medical procedure is complete.

In a one-line, cryptic message on his personal blog, the 78-year-old actor gave an update to his fans and followers.

"medical condition .. surgery .. can't write (sic)" Bachchan wrote on Saturday.

The actor recently shared the details about the projects his family members -- wife Jaya Bachchan, son Abhishek Bachchan and daughter-in-law Aishwarya Rai Bachchan -- were currently working on.

Amitabh Bachchan had also said he would soon start shooting for filmmaker Vikas Bahl's next.

The screen icon was last seen in Shoojit Sircar's Gulabo Sitabo, which had a digital premiere last year in the wake of the coronavirus-induced shutdown.

One of the busiest stars in the Hindi film industry, Amitabh Bachchan was recently shooting for MayDay, directed by and starring Ajay Devgan.

The veteran actor, who regularly keeps in touch with his followers whom he calls his ''extended family'' via social media, was also one of the first Indian film personalities to be diagnosed with coronavirus last year.

Bachchan, along with his son Abhishek Bachchan, 45, and daughter-in-law Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, 47, had tested positive for COVID-19 in July 2020. His granddaughter, Aaradhya (nine) too had contracted the virus.

They were admitted to a private hospital here for treatment and were discharged later.

Bachchan will next be seen in the sports-drama Jhund, directed by Nagraj Popatrao Manjule, which debuts in theatres on 18 June. His other release for the year, Chehre, will open theatrically on 30 April.

Nancy Drew, streaming on Voot Select, takes the business of a ‘gritty’ reimagining a little too seriously

On December 4 last year, Hulu released the first season of The Hardy Boys, based on the eponymous mystery novel series (intended for children and teens) by Franklin W Dixon. A couple of weeks ago, The CW’s Nancy Drew (streaming in India on Voot Select, based on Carolyn Keene’s YA (young adult) detective fiction series, began its second season.

In many ways, these updates are doing what series updates do circa the Disney-led year of our Lord 2021— craft the young protagonists’ ‘tough’, ‘gritty’ coming-of-age journey around the death of a parent. Frank and Joe Hardy (16 and 12-years old, respectively) investigate a larger, town-wide conspiracy around their mother Laura’s mysterious death. 18-year-old Nancy Drew follows more of a monster-of-the-week vibe a la Buffy. But even her story eventually drifts towards her biological mother, whose ghost is said to haunt the town of Horseshoe Bay, Maine, where Nancy and her friends (‘the Drew Crew’) solve mysteries.

Origin stories

Almost a century has passed since these characters were created — the Hardy Boys began in 1927, Nancy Drew in 1930 — and as these latest onscreen adaptations show us, their market appeal remains formidable. Both these series were created by the American publisher, author and businessman Edward Stratemeyer (1862-1930), the founder of the Stratemeyer Syndicate. A prolific author in the late 19th and early 20th century American tradition of ‘dime novels’ (cheaply produced paperback editions of adventure and mystery narratives, generally), Stratemeyer realised that he could churn out a reliable supply of unique titles every year if he hired a team to work on several plot outlines simultaneously.

The Stratemeyer Syndicate began operations in 1905 in Newark, New Jersey with a team comprised mostly of journalists, who Stratemeyer paid a flat fee for each completed manuscript while retaining the copyright. During his dime novel days, Stratemeyer’s books would be sent for second and third print runs by publishers eager to cash in, but he saw no part of those revenue cycles; he was being paid a flat fee. Clearly, this harsh lesson sunk in. ‘Franklin W. Dixon’ and ‘Carolyn Keene’, then, were both pseudonyms used by the Syndicate to preserve the myth of a singular creator.

And although it was the success of The Hardy Boys that made Stratemeyer introduce Nancy Drew as a way of replicating that performance among young women, teenaged Nancy (16 in earlier iterations, changed to 18 later) would become the Syndicate’s more influential contribution to popular culture. Indeed, several prominent American women acknowledged the character’s role in their life; Hillary Clinton, Sonia Sotomayor and the late Supreme Court judge Ruth Bader Ginsburg among them. Indeed, Ginsburg was invited to make a guest appearance on The CW’s Nancy Drew in 2019 (it didn’t happen, eventually). Latter-day authors who created female sleuths of their own, like Sara Paretsky, have written about how Nancy Drew was a formative influence for their own work (Paretsky’s detective VI Warshawski has been closing cases of her own for decades now).

Following Stratemeyer’s death in 1930, his daughters Harriet and Edna controlled the Syndicate, with the former generally credited for continuing the Nancy Drew series. In 1984, Simon and Schuster bought the Stratemeyer Syndicate and since then they have reinvented the character in various avatars, the current iteration being Nancy Drew Diaries, published under S&S’s Aladdin imprint.

The ‘rough and tumble’, the WASP privilege

Like the trajectories followed by American comic book superheroes, the changes made to Nancy Drew down the years has been reflective of several different political developments. 23 out of the first 30 Nancy Drew novels were written by Mildred Benson (1905-2002), the first person to get a master’s degree in journalism at the University of Iowa.

Since the 1980s and 90s, long after she stopped writing these stories, Benson’s contributions to the Nancy Drew canon have been more widely recognised. She had her disagreements with both generations of Sratemeyers — Edward didn’t like the fact that Nancy wasn’t submissive and stereotypically feminine like the fictional heroines of the 1920s and 30s, while the Wellesley-educated Harriet introduced a lot of her own sense of refinement to Nancy, against Benson’s wishes. As Benson later said, “I was probably a rough and tumble newspaper person who had to earn a living, and I was out in the world. That was my type of Nancy.”

In the beginning, Nancy Drew was an exemplar of second-wave feminist ideals, an independent young woman who shines in a ‘man’s world’ ie police work. Moreover, Nancy has little to no parental interference in her life: her mother is no more and her father positively adores her. Her signature blue roadster (a convertible from the 70s onwards) symbolised the agency and the mobility that made her a hero for adolescents. From the 1950s onwards, after nearly 300,000 American young men lost their lives in World War II, mystery, adventure and feats of bravery in fiction once again became the sole preserve of boys. Mildred Benson’s early Nancy Drew novels were rewritten to conform to feminine ideals favoured by Republicans (in the 1950s, Republican Dwight D. Eisenhower won two presidential elections, both landslides) and the religious Right in America.

In her essay “From Paragraphs to Pages: The Writing and Development of the Stratemeyer Syndicate Series” (collected in the 1995 volume Rediscovering Nancy Drew, edited by Carolyn Dyer and Nancy Romalov), Deidre Johnson, who also wrote a biography of Stratemeyer, summarises these rewrites in a revelatory section. Less physical combat, reduced hijinks — and certainly no masturbation for a nice young lady like Nancy.

“Where Nancy drove policemen in her car, they now drive her. At camp, in the new versions, the girls are supervised by a chaperon. What Nancy once did for herself is done by her boyfriend Ned in the revised version, or else she is carried off by him to rest after combat.”

While acknowledging Nancy Drew’s privilege as a rich white girl as well as author Sara Paretsky’s critique of the racial attitudes reinforced by novels like The Secret of the Old Clock, Johnson defends Drew against some of the criticism from critics in the 80s and 90s — most of them, Johnson argued, were reading the regressive latter-day rewrites and not Mildred Benson’s 1930s second-wave feminist texts. Johnson also reminds us of the narrative value of Nancy being motherless, since the heroines of Charlotte Bront├л et al benefitted greatly from not having a mother tell them how to behave, when to curtsy and which male excesses to tolerate in perpetuity.

“The roadster, the lack of a female trainer in patriarchy, and the sheer gutsiness are what make the original Nancy Drew a moment in feminist history. Her class and the fact of her ready money and upper-middle-class WASP assumptions are what make her an embarrassment today. The question is, should we therefore dismiss her as predominantly an embarrassment, a moment in the history of feminism of which we are now ashamed?” Johnson thinks the answer is ‘no’, not least because Drew, like Dorothy Sayers’s Lord Wimsey, relied upon intuition and what Stephen Jay Gould called “integrative thinking” to solve crimes — a sort of pushback against the male-centric, deductive reasoning cult built by Hercule Poirot and Sherlock Holmes fans.

Rewriting Nancy for Gen Z

“I don’t go searching in the dark anymore. Not after the darkness found me.” This line from the opening episode of The CW’s Nancy Drew sets the tone for the kind of ‘reimagining’ process the show aims for. Nancy says this at her mother’s funeral, hinting that she’ll stop being a detective (not for long, of course). The first time we see Nancy onscreen after her mother’s funeral, she’s having casual sex with Ned Nickerson (Nancy’s boyfriend in the original Mildred Benson run). Gone, too, is the charmed equation the canonical Nancy has with her dad — this Nancy is barely on talking terms with hers. This is a Nancy with palpable baggage and series star Kennedy McMann does a good job of playing the hot mess that the show’s writers clearly want her to be. In a cutesy move, the opening episode features

Racial diversity is one of the things the makers of Nancy Drew take seriously, especially since critiques along racial lines (like Sara Paretsky’s foreword to a reprint of The Secret of the Old Clock) have gained traction in recent years. Ned Nickerson is an African-American and a former felon. Georgina or “George”, the ‘mannish’ sidekick character from the original series, is re-imagined as an Asian-American woman named George Fan, who also happens to be Nancy’s boss (Nancy works as a waitress at the diner George manages).

There’s another reason why the “I don’t look for darkness, not since darkness found me” line is used to set the ball rolling for Nancy Drew. Broadly speaking, America’s young people are mad as hell and they won’t take it anymore. The last three decades have seen young people’s share of the total wealth in the country reduce from 30 percent to 19 percent. Federal minimum wage levels have been stagnant for over a decade. As the GameStop saga showed the world, America’s billionaires are the country’s pre-eminent super villains right now, bar none.

And therefore the ‘darkness’ in the story cannot come from within young Nancy or her Drew Crew; it has to be forced upon them by the cruel, monopolistic world ruled by their parents. Whatever the race or class-related missteps of the canonical Nancy in the past, a contemporary teen sleuth was always going to battle homegrown oligarchs, the unrealistically rich folks who believe they’re above the rules. Sure enough, the wealthy Hudson family is revealed as the show’s Big Bad by the end of season 1, and season 2 has now set about expanding on this theme.

Both Nancy Drew and The Hardy Boys, it could be argued in fact, take the business of a ‘gritty’ reimagining a little too seriously — the former has a straight-up ghost storyline that’s as sombre as it gets while the latter places its 12 and 16-year-old protagonists in psychologically scarring situations regularly. But for the most part, they’re good, clean, all-American fun with a side of well-intentioned instruction, the kind envisioned by Stratemeyer and company.
