The Haunting of Bly Manor to premiere on 9 October, Netflix confirms with series teaser

Horror drama The Haunting of Bly Manor will debut on 9 October, Netflix has announced.

The streamer revealed the premiere date as it released the first teaser trailer of the follow-up to its successful and critically acclaimed horror anthology The Haunting of Hill House.

Check out the official announcement below

The season two of the Netflix series derives its title from the setting of Henry James' 1898 novella The Turn of the Screw, which features the story of two orphans (Benjamin Evan Ainsworth, Amelie Smith) looked after by a young governess (Victoria Pedretti), who acts as the narrator.

In the one-minute-long teaser, the viewers see the Bly Manor come alive with creepy dolls as the characters deal with personal losses, old and recent.

Mike Flanagan, who also created and directed Hill House, is returning for the twin duties. He has also executive produced the new series along with Trevor Macy under a multi-year overall television deal they have signed with Netflix.

The first season of the limited series was based on Shirley Jackson's iconic novel of the same name.

It focused on the Crain family, shifting between their past selves living in the spirit-infested Hill House and their present selves dealing with both the psychological and supernatural demons that haunt them.

The cast included Michiel Huisman, Carla Gugino, Henry Thomas, Elizabeth Reaser, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Kate Siegel, Pedretti, Lulu Wilson, Mckenna Grace, Paxton Singleton, Julian Hilliard, Violet McGraw, and Timothy Hutton.

Besides Pedretti and Thomas, Siegel, and Jackson-Cohen are also returning for Bly Manor in new roles.

CU Soon movie review: Fahadh Faasil & Friends snatch innovation from the jaws of the lockdown for a clever thriller

Language: Malayalam with some English

Okay, so now I know what a dating app looks like. (*inserts laughing emoji)

That’s the platform on which UAE resident Anumol Sebastian meets silly Jimmy Kurian one fine day. By his own admission, Jimmy (played by Roshan Mathew) has a boring job in a banking corporation in the Middle Eastern desert state. We soon learn that he is flighty enough to seek a permanent relationship within days with this young woman he barely knows. (*inserts eye roll)

His mother (Maala Parvathi), with the benefit of maturity that life has not yet bestowed on him, ropes in his older cousin Kevin Thomas (Fahadh Faasil) to snoop on this stranger her son says he loves. Kevin is a tech wiz who has no qualms about hacking. These four people – seen almost entirely on their computer and cellphone screens throughout director Mahesh Narayanan’s CU Soon – set the ball rolling for what turns out to be a clever, astonishingly gripping entertainer.

The text on screen at the start of the film assures the audience that CU Soon was shot adhering to all the COVID-related safety protocols being enforced by the Kerala government during the lockdown. It was inevitable that some smart director somewhere in the world would find a way to shoot a full-fledged feature film while the ongoing coronavirus pandemic keeps humankind confined mostly to our homes. That in India this director has emerged from the Malayalam film industry aka Mollywood is expected, since the past decade has marked a return to a golden era of Malayalam cinema, with directors and writers experimenting with themes, formats and genres like never before.

Narayanan, of course, already had a track record of excellence as an editor before he made his debut as a director with 2017’s indisputably brilliant Take Off starring Parvathy and Kunchacko Boban. It is unsurprising that for a film as cutting-edge as this one – with the story rolling out entirely through the characters’ text exchanges, video conversations and voice messages – Narayanan found a natural partner in Fahadh. The star, who had a significant supporting role in Take Off, has been at the forefront of thematic innovation in recent Malayalam cinema, and is the perfect fit for CU Soon.

Despite the restrictive format, Narayanan’s sure-footed direction and brisk editing combined with his lovely cast’s comfort with the camera makes CU Soon a remarkably pacy thriller and a perfect antidote to the immobility that the pandemic has imposed on us.

CU Soon is streaming on Amazon Prime Video India.

Chadwick Boseman passes away: The Black Panther star was an antidote to apolitical actors

The 43-year-old American actor Chadwick Boseman died yesterday. Best known for his role as King T’Challa/Black Panther in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Boseman played a string of African-American icons during his career, including singer James Brown, civil rights activist Thurgood Marshall and Major League Baseball star Jackie Robinson. In a statement released by his family it was revealed that the actor had been fighting colon cancer since the last four years — he received a stage three diagnosis in 2016 and since then, the cancer had progressed to stage four. During this period, Boseman shot for several films including Black Panther, Da 5 Bloods and Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom (which will now be the actor’s final release).

Born and raised in the traditional manufacturing centre of Anderson, South Carolina, Boseman was first moved to consider a career in acting after staging a high school play about a basketball teammate who was shot to death. The son of a textile worker and a nurse, he went on to attend Howard University to study film direction. Throughout the 2000s, he appeared in various American TV shows, mostly in cameos (a particularly memorable one being his role as a street magician in a 2011 episode of Castle), before he received his big breakthrough with Brian Helgeland’s 42 (2013), where he played Jackie Robinson, the first-ever African-American Major League Baseball professional.

A much-adored figure in Hollywood, Boseman was an antidote to the popular perception of actors being largely apolitical and commerce-driven (indeed, his last-ever tweet was a picture with vice-presidential candidate Kamala Harris, urging people to vote). It wasn’t just the roles he picked — Boseman was also refreshingly honest during interviews and spoke candidly about making his way in an industry that remains largely white-dominated. For example, he fought with Marvel executives to portray King T’Challa with a Xhosa accent (as opposed to a European one). Boseman’s reasoning was that a Wakandan king’s accent or indeed, education, should have no European influences, since this was the most developed country in the world. As he told the LA Times in 2016:

“For me, Wakanda has never been conquered. So I wanted to make sure that he didn’t speak like ... well, at one time they were thinking he’d have a European accent or an American accent. I said that would not be fine because if we did that, that would be saying that they had been colonised.”

Despite Marvel’s initial fears that the accent would prove to be too much for a ‘global’ audience, Boseman was vindicated when Black Panther (directed by Ryan Coogler) became the then-highest grossing Marvel movie of all time in 2018. Coogler and Boseman proved that one could achieve commercial success without compromising on one’s artistic or political beliefs. And yes, Boseman was quite aware of the biggest bloc of criticism Black Panther faced — namely, that in its framing of Eric Killmonger (Michael B Jordan) as a villain, the film was advocating against armed struggle and for a kind of centrist status quo (represented by King T’Challa/the monarchy). The actor, however, saw it differently: he declared unambiguously that he saw T’Challa as “the enemy, in a way, the enemy I have always known, born in privilege, in power, born with a vibranium spoon”. He explained that he saw neither character as an unambiguous villain, and that Killmonger deserved to be acknowledged as an icon of liberation.

“I don’t know if we as African-Americans would accept T’Challa as our hero if he didn’t go through Killmonger,” he said, in a public conversation with writer Ta-Nehisi Coates and Black Panther colleague Lupita Nyong’O. “Because Killmonger has been through our struggle, and T’Challa hasn’t.

It is possible, of course, to grieve adequately by oneself. But in an ideal world, grief is a communal journey, a shared experience. There are days when you’re falling apart and there are days when you’re trying to keep someone else together — it’s folly to think that the two are separate phenomena. Boseman’s passing feels like an illustration of this truth: the number of stories people (especially African-American people with parents old enough to remember not being able to vote) are sharing on social media is overwhelming, to be honest. Stories about their children holding an ‘Avengers funeral’ for Boseman, stories about their aged parents crying while watching Black Panther on the large screen (“I never thought they’d put us onscreen like that”).

During his death scene in Da 5 Bloods (which will only become more poignant now that we know he was fighting cancer while shooting this), Boseman’s character Norm Holloway consoles his friend (who has just accidentally shot him), repeating their shared motto: “Blood don’t die, we multiply”. It’s more than just a life-affirming line. It’s an ideology, a reminder of standing up for something larger than yourself. It’s the kind of thing Boseman lived by — rest in power, king.

The ground is ready for a Bollywood clean-up

Some of my fondest discussions with my ‘source’ as a journalist were with film historian Feroze Rangoonwala.

He would tell me about a Bollywood of the past that seemed aglow in a crystal memory box. It had a strange simplicity. Famous directors, musicians and actors become wealthy, but only through hard work and extraordinary talent.

Stars like Dilip Kumar or Lata Mangeshkar would sometimes take a local train to the shooting or recording venue. The Bollywood of Feroze’s stories was different.

Feroze is no more.

The Bollywood of his stories is dead.

Ever since Mumbai’s filmdom and the underworld fell in love in the late ’70s, tell-tale traits of the crime world have entered the industry.

Drugs, guns, smuggling, sex rackets, terrorism, killing wildlife, road rage, drunk-driving, anti-national narrative-setting, daylight murders and mysterious deaths are the norm today, not exceptions.

With each day of investigation into actor Sushant Singh Rajput’s death, more and more details of the pernicious rot pours out.

This industry would be unrecognisable for a Raj Kapoor or Majrooh Sultanpuri or Hrishikesh Mukherjee if they were to witness it today.

The seeds of this rot were sown when don Haji Mastan got enamoured by tinsel, married a Madhubala lookalike named Sona and started investing in movies. Banks were barred from financing films till 2000, when RBI passed an amendment to recognise entertainment as a industry which could get legitimate bank credit.

The big chasm in financing was filled by the underworld. Worst damage was done through the ’80s and ’90s, when don Dawood Ibrahim reigned over Bollywood. Even after he fled to Dubai, stars fell over each other to visit him and pay obeisance. He slept with a new starlet almost every night. He presented them with expensive gifts. His word was unputdownable in the industry.

The dark, mutant DNA of today’s Bollywood comes from Dawood. Its Hinduphobia, portraying Hindu rituals as regressive and giving all other religions a free pass in films like PK, or force-fitting overtly religious Hindus as villains in series like Sacred Games, seem to flow from the mind of its former master, the architect of ’93 Mumbai serial blasts and a thousand other crimes.

Bollywood’s drug obsession, back in focus from the Sushant death investigation, is again a leaf out of the balance sheet of Dawood’s empire.

But most sinister is Mumbai’s incestuous ecosystem of politicians, mafia, businessmen, actors and directors and the police, which seem to have embarked on a desperate war of survival, cornered and exposed again and again as public fury sweeps the nation over the young actor’s extremely dubious-looking death.

This nexus has too much at stake. It has thousands of crores of business and a priceless trove of the filthiest secrets to lose. This cosy club can go to any extent to guard its dirty empire.

However, the CBI has its best team sniffing around. ED, Customs and other agencies hot on the chase. Some of the best officers with stellar Bollywood tracking record are quietly being posted in different agencies to stealthily close in. And a political family has embarked on desperate stupidity to save its own.

There is tremendous nervousness among those who brazenly broke the law and subverted truth in Bollywood. The ground under their feet is cracking. The time is ripe for a complete clean-up to begin.

Masaba Masaba review: A Netflix Original too #hot to be messy

Language: Hindi with bits of English

Despite the name appearing twice in the title, Masaba Masaba is not a vanity project by ace celebrity fashion designer Masaba Gupta. It could have very well been since it is not a biopic, which is always subject to more scrutiny and several litmus tests of authenticity. Masaba Masaba takes the hybrid route, marrying facts with fiction, and in turn, not doing full justice to either.

The first episode of the six-part series – by director Sonam Nair and her co-writers Punya Arora, Nandini Gupta, and Anupama Ramchandran – places us in the house of Masaba (yes, the home, not the brand), where a blind item puts her wobbly marriage in front of prying eyes of the town. Her suppressed reaction to the 'gossip' and the cold exchange with husband Vinit suggest there is no smoke without fire. When her husband insists on returning to his new place after an award function, Masaba insists he keeps the separation news under wraps before he convinces her to break the news via Instagram.

Subsequently, Masaba's life goes into a spiral as her inability to come to terms with the personal setback permeates her professional life. An unyielding creative void, gnawing investors, and dwindling finances add insult to injury as Masaba simultaneously struggles for a physical space of her own, endures heated arguments with her support system, i.e., actress-mother Neena Gupta (played by herself) and BFF Gia (Rytasha Rathore).

Masaba Gupta in a still from Masaba Masaba

Single parenthood, lack of communication with her daughter, and being constantly pushed out of the radar of casting directors and filmmakers, are issues Neena Gupta has often addressed on public record.

Similarly, Masaba's demons are also well-documented. It takes six episodes, spread over months, for Masaba to resolve that divorce chapter of her life in the show. But does that imply it took as long for her to do so in real life as well? Facts overlap with fiction rather conveniently here, and thus rob us of any film trivia we might be scraping for.

Neena and Masaba Gupta in a still from Masaba Masaba

But Masaba Masaba is not cut out for film buffs in that sense. It does not unfurl as a spot-the-filmy-reference game like in the case of say, Zoya Akhtar's witty insider drama Luck By Chance (2009) or Farah Khan's potshot-dishing factory Om Shanti Om (2007). The familiarity is intended to only place the viewer in the world that they believe they are up to speed with, thanks to social media. The millennials are clearly the target group here, with the popped-up colour palette (cinematography by Aditya Kapur), peppy playlist (music by Somesh Saha), peppering of woke hashtags over the dialogues, and jibes at older characters who 'just do not get it.'

Though the show starts off on an exciting note (editing by Shruti Bora), the energy dips and the plot wavers in the third and fourth episodes, where most of the shallow fun on display seems like deleted footage from Four More Shots Please!.

Masaba Gupta in a still from Masaba Masaba

One device that resonates is the role of Instagram in Masaba's life. It acts as her Daily Diary, barring the fact that it is accessible by her million followers. As an outsider, one readily assumes that exhibition on social media is a facade constructed by the celebrity in order to make life look a lot cooler. But it could also be a self-defense mechanism to make sense of life, at least in the place where one controls the narrative. Or as in the case of Masaba, it could be honest musings one seldom utters to loved ones or even to oneself.

Instagram also serves as a bridge to the communication gap between Masaba and Neena. The mother gets to know of her daughter's milestone life events through her Instagram, including the news of her separation. The scenes featuring the two fierce women are few and far between, though are consistently affecting. The narrative offers us an interestingly woven peak behind the closed doors of their house during key moments of their recent life, such as them not being on talking terms when Neena pushed out the now-famous social media post asking for work. And how Neena auditioning for her second innings breakthrough Badhaai Ho (titled Khushkhabri in the show) with a baby bump reminds her of when she carried Masaba without any support 30 years ago.

In fact, the show tries to be as much about Neena as it is about her daughter. The Masaba Mothership is a tour de force in every episode, and goes from strength to strength with renewed vigour even at 60. But her frailties and insecurities are given only a fraction of the attention attributed to Masaba. Though more fun, her parallel track feels forced after a point as it exists merely to inform Masaba's redemption towards the end.

Neena Gupta in a still from Masaba Masaba

Among other characters, there is Dhairya, Neil Bhoopalam's effective turn as the corporate counterpart to every creative endeavour, which lends urgency to the otherwise leisurely nature of an art like fashion designing ("Creativity koi nal hai kya jo khol du?"). Rytasha Rathore plays Gia, who is celebrity pastry chef-cum-entrepreneur Pooja Dhingra and Masaba's other friends all rolled into one. She excels at poking fun, lending a shoulder, and slapping her friend out of self-imposed misery. Pooja Bedi as Masaba's therapist is a brilliantly written short role but could have struck the right note with more seasoned comic timing. A special mention to Amariah Awantaye as the mini Masaba who pops up often to fill in for her grown-up version. It is a narrative tool lost on me but I do not mind it given how #adorbs the little girl is.

And then there are the celebrity cameos as themselves. Kiara Advani choosing a designer dress for a Swachh Bharat Abhiyan gig. Malavika Mohanan as the paranoid diva who cannot get her act together as the showstopper at Masaba's make-or-break show because of a breakup. Shibani Dandekar turns an artist, and makes a fortune out of an iron that has lost its steam. And Farah Khan is a complete hoot while fantasising herself in the next 'Sheila Ki Jawani.'

All these digs at the amusing banality of the film industry echo the larger idea behind Masaba Masaba: to celebrate the Hot Mess that one's life often becomes. It is certainly an idea worth endorsing, but could have been conveyed with a plot less dawdling and a script less slim. The narrative leaves out everything that is not #hot — not familiar with the milennials. It assumes the demographic can only be invested in the surface, so never dives deep enough into human psyche, where the real mess thrives.

What stays constant and at the focal point is Masaba's commendable debut as an actor, even though she plays a fictionalised version of herself.

Masaba Masaba is streaming on Netflix.

Sadak 2 movie review: Mahesh Bhatt’s interpretation of a sleeping pill

Language: Hindi

In a crucial scene in director Mahesh Bhatt’s 1991 blockbuster Sadak (Road), a grievously injured Ravi, played by Sanjay Dutt, flees a dangerous situation with the heroine, Pooja (Pooja Bhatt). He is wounded and bleeding profusely, but it does not occur to either of them that she could drive the escape vehicle. Though he is woozy from extreme pain and the blood oozing out of his wounds, it is still he who takes the wheel while she neither bats an eyelid nor offers protest, almost as if it goes without saying that driving is a god-ordained role and she, a paavam bechari ladki, could not possibly handle an automobile.

I was reminded of that scene during the climax of Sadak 2, the sequel for which the veteran director has emerged from retirement. Indian women have sent rockets into space, headed corporations, steered states and been prime minister, but when Ravi – the same Ravi, played again by Dutt – senses a threat nearby, he unblinkingly hands a gun over to Vishal (Aditya Roy Kapur) and not Aarya (Alia Bhatt), as if she, paavam bechari ladki, could not possibly know what to do with a firearm.

This is one among many elements screaming datedness in Sadak 2, now streaming on Disney+ Hotstar. The film also features Gulshan Grover as a villain with half an arm lopped off, a signature whistle assigned to the bad guy, a joke about his disability, a large knife that looks like cardboard and a fight in a godown-like space starring an owl.

Sadak was about Ravi’s determination to offer “suraksha to a young woman forced into sex work by a transgender brothel owner. Despite its cliches, conservatism and loudness, it had an interesting storyline in which something actually happened and Sadashiv Amrapurkar in full flow. Sadak 2 has nothing.

The nothingness of Sadak 2 revolves around Ravi, now the owner of a fleet of taxis, who is suicidal because Pooja is dead. Aarya enters his life demanding his services. She is a wealthy heiress running away from her Daddy who has been led astray by a fake guru-type colluding with her evil sauteli maaaaa

Her boyfriend Vishal says he fell in love with her at pehli nazar, a claim we must believe despite the Antarctica-scale coldness between Alia and Aditya.

Aarya spearheads the activist group India Fights Fake Gurus, and since some people in Bollywood still believe a love story cannot begin without a conflict to spark it, a fake conflict is manufactured here: (spoiler alert) for a vaguely explained reason – something to do with her being a rich girl – he has been abusing her online for running the group, but he later tells her he shares her beliefs and it does not occur to her to ask why then he had been trolling her over her movement. (spoiler alert ends)

It is not possible to be angry with Sadak 2 for its half-baked ideas and quarter-baked script though, because it is too boring to be worthy of even anger.

Since a hill station played a prominent role in Sadak, the hills are Aarya’s destination in Sadak 2 too. Since Amrapurkar memorably played a trans man in the first film, Makarand Deshpande briefly dresses in drag in this one. Sadak’s soundtrack is repeatedly revisited here, and this film seems to have been made for no reason other than the fact that someone somewhere is convinced that Sadak deserves a tribute. Let’s make one thing clear: Bhattsaab made some remarkable films in the 1980s and 1990s (my favourite remains Arth), but Sadak is by no yardstick his best. It was not great cinema – it was a hit, that’s it.

Understandably uninspired by the flat material they have to work with, Alia and Aditya are just plain in Sadak 2. It particularly hurts to see her being monotonous because she is capable of brilliance. Jisshu Sengupta playing Aarya’s Daddy is the only one who is not a lost cause in this cast. Priyanka Bose who was wonderfully understated just recently in Pareeksha overacts inexorably as Sadak 2’s sauteli maaaaa. And Dutt lumbers through his lines to laughable effect.

The young leads are fortunate that most of the writing is focused on the senior star. He is the one saddled with these words of wisdom that he dispenses to her, seated next to a fire late one night: “It takes two to make a truth. One who can tell it and one who can bear it. This poor guy has told you his truth. Now what will you do? We don’t let go of those close to us even after getting to know the worst about them... Do one thing – either embrace him and forgive him, or shoot him dead. Because this relationship will not end by simply pressing the delete button.”

Aiyyo.

The reference to a delete button seems to have been written to please a new generation of viewers, but heaven bless you if you can make out what that line means.

Thrown in here and there are lacklustre twists, dreary songs, multiple references to suicide and faith without any depth, ordinary cinematography (barring a couple of stunning aerial shots of mountain roads), some cheap-looking shots clearly done in a studio, footage from Sadak and Pooja’s voice giving Ravi inexplicable advice.

That’s the other thing about Sadak 2: while the camera dwells on 61-year-old Dutt’s weathered face almost throughout, it cannot bear to show us a single photograph of the now-48-year-old Pooja. Every visual of her in the film is of the smooth-skinned girl she once was, not the woman with tremendous personality that she is in 2020.

But as I said already, Sadak 2 is not even worthy of anger. It’s dead on arrival. I cannot believe Mahesh Bhatt emerged from retirement to make… this?

Venice Classics 2020: Jean-Pierre Melville’s The Red Circle is a heist thriller with poetry between the lines

Quentin Tarantino’s love for French New Wave cinema, especially the crime dramas, is well-documented. He said directors like Jean-Pierre Melville (whose Le Samourai was discussed in an earlier column) took inspiration from the Warner Bros gangster pictures with Humphrey Bogart and James Cagney, and instead of focusing on the plot, they focused on the “poetry between the lines”. I was reminded of this observation when the Venice Film Festival announced that Melville’s Le Cercle Rouge (The Red Circle, 1970) would be part of their Classics line-up. (Due to COVID-related reasons, the Classics section will be screened at the festival Il Cinema Ritrovato, in Bologna, from 25 to 31 August.)

The film opens in a manner that is a universe away from the typical Warner Bros film. It’s a quote that explains the title. Siddhartha Gautama, the Buddha, drew a circle with a piece of red chalk and said: “When men, even unknowingly, are to meet one day, whatever may befall each, whatever their diverging paths, on the said day, they will inevitably come together in the red circle.” There’s always a sense of the existential in crime/noir cinema, but the French take it a few steps further.

Take the scene where a soon-to-be-released prisoner named Corey (Alain Delon) is approached by a prison guard about a new “job” outside. The guard says Corey is the only man for the job, which he calls “classic, easy, no risk… if done right.” Well, that’s the real issue, isn’t it! If done right! Corey, at first, refuses. He doesn’t want to end up back here. But the guard persists. “With your pedigree and your time inside, who’d offer you decent work?”

We’re not even 10 minutes into the movie, and we’re already aware of something larger, something beyond Corey that’s going to result in him accepting this “job” offer. (A grim joke: he is being released early for “good behaviour”.) Society won’t make it easy for him to lead a straight life. Plus, there’s that thing the Buddha said. “When men, even unknowingly, are to meet one day…” One of these other men turns out to be Vogel (Gian Maria Volonté), who prises open his handcuffs and escapes from a train while being escorted by a policeman.

And how do Corey and Vogel meet? As the Buddha quote says: “unknowingly”. Corey is released from prison in Marseille. He buys a car and drives towards Paris. Vogel has been running (and running) in the woods, chased by policemen and dogs. He evades them, and stumbles onto a road at the edge of the forested area, and across the road is a diner, and Corey has stopped there for a meal. Vogel crosses the road and tries to open the trunks of several cars, so he can hide inside and get away. The only trunk that’s open is of the car that belongs to… Corey. It’s almost like the universe is bringing them together.

This is most unusual because the crux of the film is a heist, and when we think of a “heist movie”, we think of carefully made plans, careful preparations, carefully recruited allies, carefully considered logistics. In other words, we think of deliberate actions being set in motion by people, in order to pull off a “job”. But here, things come together… by chance.

Even a conversation among the police — one of whom is Inspector Mattei (André Bourvil ), the cop Vogel escaped from — conveys a sense of things happening, well, “unknowinglyMattei’s senior officer says, “Only chance can help now.”

In this scene, it’s not just the element of destiny (or chance, or whatever you want to call it) that leaks from the bad guys’ half of the story to that of the good guys. It’s the very nature of good and bad itself. The head of Internal Affairs who is questioning Mattei and his senior believes that no one is innocent. “All men are guilty. They’re born innocent, but it doesn’t last.” It’s his doctrine: Crime lurks within us. We have to flush it out.

With all this, it’s almost an hour before we get an inkling about the heist, which involves the “job” that Corey was told about in prison. Put differently, we’ve spent almost an hour of a 2-hour-15-minute crime film where no actual planned crime happens. (The killings that occur are of people unrelated to the “job”, and they happen… by chance.) This is what Tarantino was talking about: the poetry between the lines, the things that happen while we are waiting for the “Warner Bros” things to happen.

And now we meet Jansen (Yves Montand), who becomes the third member of the team, when Vogel and Corey decide they need a marksman. And what’s his background? He’s a former cop, a washed-up alcoholic. “One of the best shots on the force. But the corruption of his work environment finally got to him.” Jansen was once a classmate of Mattei, who is now after Vogel, who has now teamed up with Jansen. Note how everything derives from the title, how everything is circular. It’s not just the traditional “bad guys” who are bad. The people considered the “good guys” are, too. Recall what the Internal Affairs head said: “All men are guilty.”

Once we get to the heist, the film is a cracker. It involves the usual heist-y details we love — like, a bullet made of lead, antimony and tin, a “light, soft, low-density alloy” that will mould the tumblers as it flattens against the lock in the jewellery store. But even during this extraordinary, wordless stretch — the kind of sequence for which the big screen and the audience were invented — there’s a bit of personal redemption. Later, there’s a touching bit of loyalty. This isn’t to say that the Hollywood gangster/heist films had no poetry in them. It’s just that the French versified it better.

Mexican comic actor Manuel Valdés passes away aged 89

Mexican comic actor Manuel Valdés, known by his nickname “El Loco” or “The Crazy One”, has died at the age of 89, the national association of actors announced Friday.

He was the last of three brothers who played huge roles in Mexican comedy, TV, and movies for more than seven decades.

His brother Germán made a large number of movies in the 1950s and 60s under the nickname “Tin Tan,” and his brother Ramón starred for years as Don Ramón on the TV series El Chavo del Ocho. They died in 1973 and 1988.

Known for his huge bushy eyebrows and manic stare, Manuel Valdés had suffered from numerous ailments, including cancer, in recent years.

“We say farewell to one of the greatest figures of Mexican comedy, until we met again, Manuel ”El Loco” Valdés,” the actors association wrote in its Twitter account.

The youngest of the three brothers, Valdés had a TV show in the 1970s that was taken off the air, purportedly on orders from the president, after Valdés used a humorous nickname to refer to 19th-century national hero Benito Juárez.

He is survived by several children.

Funeral plans were not made public.

Sushant Singh Rajput death: Press Council directs media outlets to not violate 'norms of journalistic conduct'

Taking strong objection to the coverage of the Sushant Singh Rajput case by many media outlets, the Press Council of India on Friday said the media should adhere to the norms of journalistic conduct in covering cases under investigation and is advised not to carry out its own "parallel trial".

The media should not narrate the story in a manner so as to induce the general public to believe in the complicity of the person indicted, the Press Council of India (PCI) said in its advisory.

The Council said it has noted with "distress that coverage of the alleged suicide by a film actor by many media outlets is in violation of the norms of journalistic conduct" and, therefore, advises the media to adhere to the norms framed by it.

Asserting that publishing information based on gossip about the line of investigation by official agencies on the crime committed is not desirable, the PCI said it is not advisable to vigorously report crime related issues on a "day to day basis and comment on the evidence without ascertaining the factual matrix."

Such reporting brings undue pressure in the course of fair investigation and trial, it said.

"The media is advised to refrain from giving excessive publicity to the victim, witnesses, suspects and accused as it will amount to invasion of their privacy rights," the PCI said.

Identification of the witnesses by the media needs to be avoided as it endangers them to come under pressure from the accused or associates as well as investigating agencies, it said.

The PCI asserted that the media is advised not to "conduct its own parallel trial or foretell the decision to avoid pressure during investigation and trial."

The reporting of the alleged suicide by the actor by some of newspapers is also in violation of the norms formulated by the Council for reporting on suicide, it said.

The norm prohibits publishing stories about suicide prominently and advises the media not to unduly repeat such stories, the PCI said.

The media is expected not to use language which sensationalises or normalises suicides or presents it as a constructive solution to the problems, it said.

The PCI asked the media not to use sensational headlines or use photographs, video-footage or social media links while reporting on suicide cases.

Actress Rhea Chakraborty has been accused of abetting the suicide of filmstar Sushant Singh Rajput.

The Supreme Court had last week upheld the transfer of an FIR, lodged by Rajput's father in Patna against Rhea Chakraborty and others for allegedly abetting his son's suicide and misappropriating his money, to the CBI.

The 34-year-old actor was found hanging on June 14 in his flat in suburban Bandra.

Chadwick Boseman passes away at 43: Actor who played Black icons before finding fame as Marvel superhero loses battle with colon cancer

Los Angeles: Actor Chadwick Boseman, who played Black icons Jackie Robinson and James Brown before finding fame as the regal Black Panther in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, died Friday of cancer, his representative said. He was 43.

Boseman died at his home in the Los Angeles area with his wife and family by his side, his publicist Nicki Fioravante told The Associated Press.

Boseman was diagnosed with colon cancer four years ago, his family said in a statement.

“A true fighter, Chadwick persevered through it all, and brought you many of the films you have come to love so much,” his family said. “From Marshall to Da 5 Bloods, August Wilson’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and several more - all were filmed during and between countless surgeries and chemotherapy. It was the honor of his career to bring King T’Challa to life in Black Panther."

Boseman had not spoken publicly about his diagnosis.

Born in South Carolina, Boseman graduated from Howard University and had small roles in television before his first star turn in 2013. His striking portrayal of the stoic baseball star Robinson opposite Harrison Ford in 2013′s “42” drew attention in Hollywood and made him a star.

Boseman died on a day that Major League Baseball was celebrating Jackie Robinson day.

“This is a crushing blow” actor and director Jordan Peele said on Twitter, one of many expressing shock as the news spread across social media.

“This broke me,” said actor and writer Issa Rae.

His T’Challa character was first introduced to the blockbuster Marvel movies in 2016′s “Captain America: Civil War,” and his “Wakanda Forever” salute reverberated around the world after the release of “Black Panther” two years ago.

The character was last seen standing silently dressed in a black suit at Tony Stark’s funeral in last year’s "Avengers: Endgame."

Even at the outset of his Hollywood career, Boseman was clear-eyed about — and even skeptical of — the industry in which he would become an international star.

“You don’t have the same exact experience as a Black actor as you do as a white actor. You don’t have the same opportunities. That’s evident and true,” he told AP while promoting “42.” “The best way to put it is: How often do you see a movie about a black hero who has a love story — with a black woman, or any woman for that matter... he has a spirituality. He has an intellect. It’s weird to say it, but it doesn’t happen that often.”

In addition to Robinson and Brown, Boseman portrayed US Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall in 2017′s “Marshall.“

He took on his first producing job in last year’s action thriller “21 Bridges,” in which he also starred, and was last seen on-screen in Spike Lee’s film “Da 5 Bloods” as the leader of a group of Black soldiers in the Vietnam War.

Indian cinema and the Dalit identity: In Pariyerum Perumal, love is the only meaningful resistance in a caste-society

Historically, Indian cinema exploited the labour of Dalits in its making, whilst erasing or appropriating their stories. This was not an accidental practice. When their stories were told on screen, it would be by savarnas who also played their characters with patriarchal, sexist and casteist undertones.

The scenario has slowly changed, and the identity of Dalit characters in cinema — directed by a Dalit (and a few non-Dalit) filmmakers — has become explicit, transcending boundaries of caste and class. These filmmakers have helped shape visual storytelling that combines “justice with aesthetics”.

“Justice with aesthetics” was rarely present in cinema made by savarnas, or it was seldom honest. Dalit-Bahujan filmmakers have filled this gap, while creating a new wave of cinema that is more appealing to a Dalit-Bahujan audience.

In this series, we examine 10 Indian films that count not only among the finest cinema the country has produced, but are also intertwined with justice, politics, and aesthetic.

“Love does not begin and end the way we seem to think it does. Love is a battle, love is a war; love is a growing up.”

On reading James Baldwin for the first time a few years ago, I realised that in love — at least in inter-caste love — romance is the least widespread element. I understood why Baldwin, as a Black man, was saying what he was.

The idea of “love as battle and war” has been romantically injected into the minds of caste-Indians by mainstream Bollywood cinema; most times, with a very poor understanding of what love means in the caste-society of which these movies are part and parcel. Baldwin sees love as a way of shedding the social, cultural and psychological prejudices we uphold, against a person we are in love with.

Pariyerum Perumal (2018) directed by Mari Selvaraj, is a cult movie in this sense. It is not only a symbol of resistance against caste; it is more profound that this: it is a symbol of mature love. Because love is the greatest and the only meaningful resistance in caste society.

Coming out of our caste-mentality is a freedom, but most of us fear this freedom, especially those who benefit by it. Pariyerum Perumal provides us the courage to emerge from this fear.

***

Pariyerum Perumal aka Pariyan (played by Kathir) is a Dalit living in a village — a segregated settlement — near Tirunelveli. He’s clever and works hard at his studies. He knows his world. As the movie begins, we witness him with his pet dog Karuppi. Karuppi is Pariyan’s constant companion. Imagine the world of a Dalit man, in which rejection and humiliation are common, where he is despised by his fellow humans in a caste-society. But animals do not discriminate. So it is not difficult to understand just what Karuppi means to Pariyan.

Still from Pariyerum Perumal

Still from Pariyerum Perumal

In a heinous assault, some upper cast hooligans tie Karuppi to the railway tracks where he is crushed by an oncoming train. Pariyan somehow overcomes his grief over Karuppi’s loss and makes his way into law college, a place that represents his dreams, to be like Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar.

Here, he faces difficulties in understanding the teachers’ instructions, imparted in English. English — in the life of a brilliant Dalit student — becomes more than a language. It becomes a cultural tool by which those from dominant castes mock him. Several of his classmates do not understand English, yet Pariyan is the only one mocked and hated by his teachers for flagging the issue.

***

Pariyan’s honesty catches the attention of Jothi Mahalakshmi or Jo (played by Anandhi) who belongs to the dominant feudal caste. Pariyan tells Jo his problem, and she offers to help. As they English, they talk, laugh, share moments and stories from the past, and it leads to a feeling of love within them. It is as organic as the earth begetting trees, or bees being attracted to flowers.

When Jo invites only Pariyan to her sister’s wedding, her father becomes suspicious. He makes inquiries about Pariyan and finds out he is a Dalit. At the wedding, Jo’s father sends her away from the venue on some pretext and corners he just-arrived Pariyan. “You both study together, does that make you equal?” he asks Pariyan. The Constitution of India made Jo and Pariyan equal, as human beings capable of loving whoever they want. But Jo’s feudal, dominant caste father refuses to uphold constitutional values. For him, caste-norms are everything. He has Pariyan beaten up by some thugs and relatives; they urinate on him. Pariyan is in shock.

The incident leaves Pariyan in a dilemma. He tries to use alcohol to get over it, but it doesn’t help. He cannot tell Jo what has happened because that would make her father a villain in her eyes. At the same time, Pariyan is dealing with an issue concerning his own father, who works as a drag queen. When his father visits his college and is humiliated and partly disrobed by the upper caste students, Pariyan’s feelings are deeply wounded. But Jo stands by him through it all.

***

Jo is like a flower in Pariyan’s difficult life. But her father hires a henchman to kill Pariyan, who fails to carry out the murder. Pariyan is also attacked by Jo’s relatives and her father. He fights back, but spares Jo’s father, telling the older man that if Jo were to know about his violent intentions and actions, she would never forgive him.

Even at the height of his righteous rage, Pariyan does not lose hope and behaves like a visionary. He displays a maturity and sensibility heroes in Indian cinema rarely possess. Perhaps he knows that for the society Dr Ambedkar envisioned, it is necessary to kill caste, not castiests.

Jo’s father meets Pariyan in college. They sit in the canteen, while Jo brings white tea (with milk) for her father and black tea for Pariyan. They drink tea together. Jo’s father tells him, “We can see [about the future]. We do not know what will happen”, to which Pariyan replies, “As long as you remain the same and expect me to remain a dog, nothing will change”. Jo, her father, and Pariyan begin to walk away. The frame focuses on the empty cups of white and black tea: the beginning of a dialogue towards the annihilation of caste.

***

The movie ends with hope, directing us to a possible bloodless revolution — the dream of Dr Ambedkar. While audiences across India, numbering in the millions, pay money to watch movies which provide them an escape from the truth, Pariyerum Perumal introduces us to the beauty of truth — and the necessity of an anti-caste way of life.

The Gone Game: This 'lockdown thriller' series with a promising cast is simple yet layered, with twists galore

One of the first things you may notice about The Gone Game, streaming on Voot Select, is that its title sequence — with its kaleidoscopic mirrored images — seems inspired from the titles of the Netflix hit Dark. You will probably take it in your stride soon enough, though; because what follows is a tight, gripping, four-episode story set in the earliest days of India’s nationwide COVID-19 lockdown in late March.

The Gujrals, an ‘upper-class’ family, are spread across cities during the lockdown. Like many others, they catch up via video calls and make jokes about rattling thalis. One of them even keeps her ‘digital footprint’ to a minimum because she is particular about ‘privacy,’ and keeping her info from the government. (Never mind that if you have a mobile number in your name today, it means you have Aadhaar, so your privacy is almost like our world without COVID-19 — it does not exist.)

Yet, it is specifically the COVID-19 lockdown that provides The Gone Game the hook for its thriller story, involving (tiny spoiler) betrayals of different shapes and sizes, and a few hundred crores of money. (Aside: Notice how these days the stakes with money in our screen stories are always a casual few hundred crores? All the thousands and lakhs of crores we have seen in headlines have clearly upped the game for regular fictional scammers.)

Shot remotely during the lockdown, a lot of it in the actors’ homes itself, it nevertheless manages a slick feel that does not actively remind you of the constraints and logistical challenges the crew would have faced to pull it off. Instead, you are focused on the rapidly unfolding family dynamic, which takes a dark turn — one among them dies of COVID-19. The death quickly turns into a far deeper mystery with possible foul play, and the needle of suspicion begins to point to within the family itself.

Even though many of the tropes are familiar — a rich family with secrets; red herrings to keep you looking elsewhere; an omnipotent hacker providing key breakthroughs in the mystery later; an enthusiastic Shweta Tripathi taking charge of things (we will come to the actor again in a bit) — the state of the world becomes a major player in the story.

The victory of the show is how it manages constantly shifting remote perspectives, using them to deftly ‘thicken’ the plot, so to speak.

God and the Devil (they say) are both in the details. In The Gone Game, the details come fast and furious: a menacing blackmailer, a social media influencer, a fellow who returned from Bangkok just around the time the country was shutting down, now in self-quarantine, the works. There are couples with distance issues, kids with underlying daddy issues, and thankfully, no connectivity issues.

A chunk of the narrative unfolds over screens, but that is no impediment to the story. It seems we have all taken our intimate relationships with screens to the next level during the COVID-19 lockdown, so the reliance on so many of them to narrate a story bothers us far less. As things get murkier, you will have theories about who, what, and why; and the makers gleefully fuel all of them, while also managing to raise questions about general life stuff — ‘influencer culture,' ‘relationships’ et al. The cast is large enough to spawn a bunch of theories, yet small enough so that things never get too convoluted.

And it is a solid cast. Sanjay Kapoor’s face looks like it was meant to be in distress and extract pity, so he is perfect as 'distraught dad.' Arjun Mathur plays his son, and he is reliable as always. There are two others among the cast, however, that play a big part in keeping things interesting at all times.

There is a gear that Shweta Tripathi operates at, in this show and in other roles before this, that makes her seem so enthusiastic, so devoted to playing her part. When I see her face, the word I see in the eye of my mind, and feel in my heart is 'enthusiasm.' ‘Smartypants-turning-detective-by-happenstance’ is a character right up her enthusiastic-alley, and Tripathi dives into it... whole-heartedly. (Got you.) Watching her in every role that she does makes me wait for her to do meatier and more complex parts; I hope creators are lining up.

Then there is Shriya Pilgaonkar, whose screen presence is maturing with every passing performance. Here, she plays a social media influencer who ‘performs’ her life online for her followers, which leads to ethical questions; particularly when tragedy strikes her, it obviously finds its way online for the world to see. It is a part that requires a certain kind of persona, and there is a certain coolth about the actor that is worthy of being mined and honed.

At four episodes of about half an hour each, The Gone Game is a quick binge, with twists to keep you interested all the way to the end. It is a remarkable achievement considering the lockdown constraints, but it also reminds you that there is a story at every turn, and that for a thriller to thrill, simplicity works as long as there is a tangible effort at the writing stage; you have to keep the audience involved and guessing.
