The Morning Show review: Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon navigate the newsroom in a post #MeToo world

Note: This is a review of the first three episodes of The Morning Show, which will be available to stream on Apple TV Plus on 1 November. New episodes will continue to roll out weekly, every Friday.

What works and what doesn't in the Apple TV Plus series, The Morning Show, can best be illustrated with one of its introductory scenes. Bradley Jackson (Reese Witherspoon), an old-school non-partisan reporter, is covering a coal mine protest in Virginia when an unruly pro-coal protester knocks down her cameraman while complaining about "fake news." So, she grabs him by the collar, exposes his ignorance and launches into a furious diatribe against the politicians and the government. She soon becomes a viral Internet sensation and gets invited on the titular Morning Show, hosted by veteran TV anchor Alex Levy (Jennifer Aniston), who is left to pick up the pieces after her co-anchor Mitch Kessler (Steve Carell) gets fired over a #MeToo scandal.

Creator Jay Carson reveals what is currently wrong with the 24-hour hyper-paced news cycle: the constant need to be on top of viral stories which end up hurting the quality of news coverage, how the Internet has turned anyone with a cell phone into a journalist, and how news reporters often become the news themselves, among others. But the show also suffers from some of the very issues it is critiquing: the story covers a lot of breadth, but not enough depth; it reduces the inherent ambiguity of complex issues with simplistic speechifying; for all its talk of representation, the cast and main characters are predominantly white. And in this era of peak TV — as Bradley says, “it’s exhausting” — with so many streaming platforms and so many originals, it doesn't really stand out despite its starry cast.

The Morning Show works as an entertaining mood piece with a backstage look at a news programme broadcast. Its story of a news anchor's fall from grace is undoubtedly similar to the sexual misconduct scandal of NBC's Today show host Matt Lauer. Like Mitch and Alex, Lauer and Ann Curry (although she quit long before the scandal) were like the "mom and dad of morning TV" for millions of Americans. Although the narrative may not be exact in its details, it is unmistakably true to the spirit of events that marked a radical shift in our cultural outlook regarding sexual harassment, the abuse of power, and the silencing of women's voices.

However, most of the drama and conversation between the genders is not so much about sexual misconduct as it is about power politics in the workplace. So, as Alex fights to sustain her position of power, the network executives led by Cory Ellison (Billy Crudup) try to capitalise on the situation to replace her with someone new and spunky — like Bradley.

The script has Aaron Sorkin's punchy rhythm and Amy Sherman-Palladino's melodramatic styling, even though it mocks the latter. But often smart-sounding bromides are fed into the mouth of a character to make up for weak dialogue. Sample this for example, where Bradley describes her faux idealism: "Kid grows up in the country around a bunch of cows and cornfields, and dreams of a life that's less about manure and more about ideas, things that matter — only to grow up and realise manure matters a whole lot."

Bradley combines Tracy Flick's fiery ambition and Madeline Mackenzie's angry outbursts — and Witherspoon's talents are tailor-made for the role. Alex is perhaps Aniston's most challenging role of her career, and is assured enough in her ability to touch upon various emotions to illuminate her character's inward and outward struggles. Crudup as the sly network executive has a triumphant smirk on his face throughout as he manipulates things behind the scenes. He pushes corporate agenda one minute ("People don't want news or journalism; they want entertainment") and champions feminism ("Be the narrative real women are living") the next. Equally manipulative is Morning Show talent booker Hannah Shoenfeld, whom Gugu Mbatha-Raw plays with a devious calmness while providing a running commentary on the lengths new agencies go to in order to control the #MeToo narrative. Steve Carell continues to stretch his dramatic chops as he traverses the tricky terrain of humanising a sexual predator.

Mitch's character is an interesting one. He denies the accusations of course. He reiterates that they were always consensual and refers to them as "just extracurricular sex." He calls #MeToo McCarthyism, and even blames it all on Harvey Weinstein. But we see him flustered for the first time when a filmmaker (played by Martin Short) facing similar allegations justifies his actions by saying, “There’s nothing sexy about consent.” Seeing Mitch visibly disquieted, he rephrases it to: "I guess what I’m saying is humanity happens in the unspoken moments and I just feel badly for a generation that loses that." However, Mitch doesn't believe his actions are as deplorable or inexcusable, like those of the rapists and sexual abusers who were exposed in the first wave of #MeToo.

Are the showrunners actually saying the #MeToo charges in the second wave are not as serious as those from the first — or are they simply playing devil's advocate to provoke a debate?

or those questioning the showrunners' motives, they don't exactly let men like Mitch off the hook but they sure are navigating some murky gray areas that will challenge viewers to question their reactions to Carell's character. But if they really do want to dissect the cultural reckoning that is #MeToo, they must consider more carefully on how they tell their story. This will make it easier to judge the show on its own merit, rather than the merit of the movement it is inspired from.

However, The Morning Show not only delves into the fate of a man outed by #MeToo, it also tells a more important one about two women navigating the workplace in its aftermath. Although the show is hosted by two female news anchors, it is still the men who control everything. As Alex says, "Sometimes, women can't ask for control. So, they have to take it" — and the show works best when they do.

Sushi review: Biswa Kalyan Rath's new Amazon special is way more than a hard-hitting social commentary

Biswa Kalyan Rath's sardonic sense of humour has always been one of his biggest assets. Rath has over time consolidated his position as a strong comedian, with the ability to sway audiences with the simplest of observations in the most poignant ways. This is most visible in his first Amazon Prime special, Biswa Mast Aadmi,

His second special Sushi was advertised as a mix of all and nothing, a delicious goop of likes and dislikes, the odds and the conventional. As promised, Rath delivers and how! Instead of treading very obvious political paths, he chooses to talk about important social dilemmas in the most veiled manner. Audiences are reminded of lackadaisical bank employees (and the eternal annoyance they cause), bad footpaths, leaking taps, corrupt bureaucrats, and a general happily-ignorant nation that works in unison towards nothing, as it turns out.

Biswa is much less corrosive this time around. He softly plants the jokes in audiences' minds and lets them figure it out eventually. While Mast Aadmi had an undertone of years of angst and a sense of emancipation, Sushi revels in the knowledge that 'not much makes sense'.

Always a subtle voice of awareness, Biswa's special holds ground on important issues. He takes on the issue of corruption head-on. In a well-crafted set about airport officials and their signboards declaring "Do Not Pay Bribe", the comedian opens the hilarious chasm on the surface of Indian democracy. "Other countries ask their people to not take bribes, but our government knows that the main culprits are customers." In a detailed bit that follows, Biswa holds up the helplessness of law-abiding tax-payers by pitting them as more-than-willing participants in the bribe wars.

But in his rant against society, Biswa never forgets his USP — to connect on a personal level. He introduces a parallel narrative about his mother (which seems to be an easy target), to explain how bizarre Indian families can be. From his mother's incomprehensible calls for house help to her magical abilities to trace lost items in the house, Rath comes up with a compelling lot — add to that a brilliant section on stage-lighting effects, and it makes for a perfect set.

The main element binding the Amazon special, is Rath's idea of modern India and all its weird quirks. Talking about a sign on the road which said "Accident Prone Area", Biswa questions why the government is so interested in giving him disclaimers about the area instead of doing something about it — "Jab tumko pata hai wahaa accident hota hai, toh kuch karo na. Mere saath dard kya baat rahe ho?" The comedian's understandable agony is shared generously with the room as they burst into peels of laughter.

Despite Sushi's likeability, the total set lacks the slap-in-the-face epiphanies that Biswa is generally known for. You laugh, but its more of a breezy reaction, rather than a full, guttural sign of appreciation. The best thing about Sushi though, is Rath's enthusiasm to slide into topics that are far from personal, or more importantly, dealing with material that has little to no space for eccentric improvisations.

In the end, Biswa proves to be the master of anecdotal comedy, but slips marginally when it comes to universal playing grounds of comedy.

Bigil, Mersal, Theri: How Atlee and Vijay's collaboration have set the bar high for mainstream Tamil films

Director Atlee's self-assured speeches at the audio launch of his last two films, Mersal and Bigil, did raise eyebrows in the Tamil film industry. Some labeled Atlee as an overconfident filmmaker but the fans had faith in his conviction and the boldness with which he delivered those lines at some of Kollywood's most-watched events.

Atlee has helmed four films in his career since his directorial debut, Raja Rani (2013). Three of them have featured Thalapathy Vijay in the lead. With these successful projects, Atlee has proved himself as a box office friendly filmmaking force. The collaborations between Atlee and Vijay have set the bar high for mainstream commercial entertainers. They have even pushed the latter's contemporaries to walk the extra mile with their respective filmographies.

While there is an extensive debate on how Atlee's films heavily borrow themes and concepts from classic yesteryear films, there is no denying the fact that he has presented the emotions with a contemporary touch. When Mersal was criticized for its similarities to director Singeetam Srinivasa Rao's Apoorva Sagodharargal, Kamal Haasan expressed his shock at the comparisons after watching the Vijay-starrer in a private screening and vindicated Atlee from his naysayers on the internet.

"Atlee's confidence stems from his ability to present films in a grand manner. He understands the pulse of audiences and Vijay's fans very clearly. All his films have a lot of crowd-pleasing moments and provide a good theatrical experience. It's one of the reasons why his films pull audiences in droves to theaters when he joins hands with Vijay," a popular trade analyst, who wishes to remain anonymous, told Firstpost.

Theri, the first time association between Vijay and Atlee, was also the actor's first film to touch Rs 150 crore in worldwide theatrical revenue. It also sprinted past the Rs 10 crore cumulative total in the Chennai city box office. Theri, produced by Kalaipuli S Thanu's V Creations, still continues to be in the list of all-time top ten grossers of Tamil Nadu. The blockbuster success of Theri came at a crucial juncture for Vijay, since it was preceded by the disastrous performance of Chimbudevan's fantasy entertainer Puli.

Atlee demonstrated Vijay's full box office potential through Theri and surpassed his own record with Mersal, which amassed more than Rs 250 crore in global ticket sales. The dialogues in the film took a dig at digital India, the GST proposal and faced stiff opposition from political leaders across the nation. The Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) leaders even demanded the removal of politically-charged scenes from the film. However, the controversy only helped fuel Mersal's box office performance. Vijay's triple role as a magician, doctor, and village chieftain received a rapturous welcome in overseas territories as well.

From BJP's then-state unit president Tamilisai Soundararajan to General Secretary H Raja, Mersal faced the wrath of the ruling party and every other leader from neighboring states jumped on the bandwagon to express their support for Vijay. Popular leaders like Rahul Gandhi, P Chidambaram and MK Stalin extended their support to the actor and his film. Mersal became his first to touch the Rs 100 crore gross mark in Tamil Nadu. The song, 'Aalaporaan Thamizhan', composed by AR Rahman, became a rage and was declared the most played track on all popular FM stations in the state. Mersal was the most-streamed Tamil album of 2017 by music streaming app Saavn.

Mersal also pulled in nearly Rs 75 crore from overseas territories alone and touched $10 million mark in lifetime foreign takings. Now, Bigil is ready to set new benchmarks at the worldwide box office. Trade is eagerly waiting to see if the film would repeat the success stories of Theri and Mersal and set the bar high once again in Tamil cinema. If Bigil touches Rs 300 crore in worldwide gross, it will be another record breaking achievement for Vijay. The film has received good reviews and positive word-of-mouth. The Diwali holiday weekend has ensured good footfall for the sports drama.
